Second Monthly Seminar — ERC Advanced Grant Oecologie
Caroline Angleraux: Simplicity and complexity in life phenomena according to Haeckel
At: Maison de la Recherche, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Salle Claude Simon
4, rue des Irlandais, 75005 Paris
Date: Novembrer 14, 2025, 2:30–5:30 p.m.
At its origin, the term “ecology” (or “Oecologie” in German) did not only refer to a subdiscipline of biology. When its inventor, the German biologist Ernst Haeckel, coined the term in his General Morphology of Organisms (1866), he outlined the contours of a vast philosophical project rooted in German Naturphilosophie, anthropology, and aesthetics.
The ERC Advanced Grant research project Oecologie. The German Sources of Ecology (2025–2030) seeks to rediscover this forgotten intellectual enterprise and to reassess its implications. It calls for a radical shift in perspective: to broaden our understanding of ecology beyond its strictly scientific dimension, and to recover its philosophical depth and contemporary relevance.
For this second seminar, we are delighted to welcome Caroline Angleraux (Inserm U1253 - iBrain, Tours), who will share insights from her research on the concepts of simplicity and complexity in life phenomena from the standpoint of Ernst Haeckel's thought and works.
The lecture will be followed by a roundtable discussion with Laurent Loison (UMR SPHERE, Paris), Ghyslain Bolduc, Antoine Dussault (CIRST, Université de Montréal), and Nicola Bertoldi.
The event will be open to all. Do not hesitate to contact us for remote attending.
