The ItaPhen Research Group at the Husserl Archives of the University of Cologne is looking for authors interested in contributing to the forthcoming Handbook of Italian Phenomenology. The volume will be published in German and English by Metzler in 2027. An Italian translation is planned for 2028.
About the Handbook
The Handbook of Italian Phenomenology aims to fill a significant gap in the history of twentieth-century philosophy by presenting a comprehensive exploration of phenomenology’s development and unique trajectories within the Italian context. Despite phenomenology’s profound influence on Italian philosophy and culture, a systematic account of its growth, major thinkers, schools, and themes has been largely absent from international discourse. The Handbook intends to explore the central themes and debates of Italian phenomenology, as well as its intersections with other philosophical and scientific fields. It will be a leading international resource for scholars interested in exploring this rich and highly original tradition of phenomenological thought.
The Call
The Handbook is divided into six sections: (1) History, (2) Authors, (3) Centers & Traditions, (4) Receptions, (5) Applications & Influences, (6) Topics & Debates. Entries for sections 1-4 have already been commissioned to experts in the field. Here you can find a provisional table of contents, along with a list of authors who have already confirmed their participation in the volume. With this call, we invite all authors who wish to contribute to one or more of the following entries of the Handbook in Sections 5 and 6:
Section 5: Applications & Influences of Italian Phenomenology
● Italian Phenomenology and German Idealism
● Italian Phenomenology and Structuralism
● Italian Phenomenology and Experimental Psychology
● Italian Phenomenology and Hermeneutics
● Italian Phenomenology and Poststructuralism
● Italian Phenomenology and Philosophy of Law
Section 6: Topics & Debates in Italian Phenomenology
● Teleology
● Crisis
● History
● Temporality
● Science
● Language
● Body (Leiblichkeit)
Submission Language(s)
Please note that the first edition of the Handbook will be in German. For this reason, preference will be given to contributors who intend to write in German; however, we will also accept contributions in Italian and English. If necessary, we will provide proofreading or translation services by native German speakers. Further information about translation and proofreading services, as well as detailed guidelines, will be provided after notification of acceptance.
Submission Guidelines
● Entries should not exceed 18.500 characters (including spaces), which corresponds to approximately five pages in the handbook.
● The bibliography is not included in the character count and should include 10 to 15 titles.
● Each entry should provide a comprehensive overview of the topic, ensuring clarity and accessibility.

● July 1, 2025 – Manifestation of Interest Due
● August 1, 2025 – Notification of Preliminary Acceptance
● March 1, 2026 – Completed Entries Due
● July 1, 2026 – Editorial Reviews Completed
● August 1, 2026 – Authors’ Revisions Due
● Fall/Winter 2026 – Final Submission by Editors
● Summer/Fall 2027 – Expected Publication

● a cover letter, including, as a list in the order,

○ (3) the entry or entries to which you would like to contribute, and
○ (4) the language in which you intend to write (in case you are willing to write the contribution not in your mother tongue, language proficiencies should be mentioned in the CV).
