Thomas Piketty’s work stands out today as an optimistic vision of possibility and promise in a world where many lament the return of rampant inequality. Piketty insists that greater equality is possible and in fact is in progress already. He maps out a vision of social democratic politics that calls for an internationalist federalised welfare state that enables ordinary people to take back control from international finance and bring tech lords and billionaires to heel under new tax laws – and even proposes the introduction of a universal inheritance for all.

Yet does Piketty’s vision hold up to scrutiny in these days of authoritarian politics, the crisis of international law, climate catastrophe, and the advent of AI? Does his work take seriously the roots of welfare politics in the imbablance created by colonial violence and domination? In his talk, Thomas Piketty will update us on his proposals for a new welfare politics, and we will hear discussion and questions from guest speakers, including:

Professor Sam Chambers (Johns Hopkins)

Professor Prathama Banerjee (CDS, Dehli)

The event will be online and in person at the University of Brighton, Grand Parade, City Campus (BN2 0JY); and followed by a drinks reception. 12:00 – 16:00 (UK Time)
