The African Institute of Epistemology & Philosophy of Science (ACEPS) (https://www.uj.ac.za/aceps), at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa invites application for the GES stipendiary philosophy postdoctoral fellowship (ZAR 250 000 per annum tax free) starting 1 January 2027 (or later depending on visas for international candidates), renewable for up to 2 years. 

ACEPS's core areas of expertise are ­epistemic decolonisation, epistemic oppression, African epistemology, social epistemology, the political philosophy and epistemology of the internet/AI. 

The Institute has 5 postdocs (2 international) (https://uj.ac.za/aceps/team), one of the biggest international network of Rеsearch Associates and visitors (see ACEPS website), as well great funded opportunities to present at local and international conferences.

The GES area of interest for ACEPS is the Epistemology of Climate Change (broadly construed).

The candidate will:

  • have obtained their PhD in Philosophy no earlier than 1 Jan 2025 or will graduate in 2026
  • be proficient in English
  • have a burgeoning publication record in the epistemology of climate change (broadly construed)
  • be required to be present in person at ACEPS and actively contribute to its vibrant life
  • be expected to publish 2 or more journal articles per year
  • be expected to apply for external postdoctoral funding, NRF or others

  3. A copy of the doctoral thesis abstract
  4. A motivation letter outlining a) suitability for the fellowship and b) fit within ACEPS
  5. A concise research proposal (3–5 pages) aligned to the host research area
  6. Two academic reference letters
  7. Evidence of research outputs/publications
  8. One published paper as a writing sample
