Dear colleagues,

The first session of the HISTory of Epistemology and Philosophy of Science Working Group (HISTEPS), will take place online on Thursday 16 October (16:00-17:30 Venice Time, CET).

Flavia Padovani (Drexel University), Hans Reichenbach and C.I. Lewis on the Pragmatic A Priori: Cognition and Values

Abstract: This talk explores the concept of the pragmatic a priori in the philosophies of Hans Reichenbach and C.I. Lewis, focusing on its cognitive and ethical significance. Though emerging from distinct traditions—Reichenbach from logical empiricism and Lewis from American pragmatism—both thinkers converge on a reconfiguration of the a priori not as fixed truths, but rather as adaptable conceptual frameworks guiding empirical inquiry. The talk examines how this functional and revisable a priori bridges epistemology and value in each account, while also emphasizing their differences. It concludes by discussing Cynthia Schuster’s critique of Reichenbach, which raises concerns about an internal inconsistency in his overall conception.

The seminar will be held online. To receive the Zoom link, please send a message to sci...@unive.it
