Profiles of the candidates
The successful candidates hold a PhD in philosophy. They are
committed, engaging and capable teachers, as demonstrated by
prior teaching experience and/or a sample lecture (if invited
to an interview). They enjoy and are able to teach philosophy
to both philosophers and non-philosophers. We welcome
candidates that can teach subjects outside their areas of
specialization.
The successful candidates find it important to engage with
society as a philosopher, for example by participating in
public debate. They are also good researchers and have a track
record of publications (e.g., in good international journals
or well-received books with good publishers) or show the
capability of developing such a record early in their career.
The candidate is expected to publish on average 1 article in
an A-journal each year and to apply regularly for external
research funding (generally speaking we follow the ozsw
list of examples as quality
indicator). The successful candidates are expected to
participate actively in the research activities of the
Department and communicate their research to people outside
their specialization or philosophical orientation. They are
open to interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration. We
welcome applications from all philosophical traditions,
including but not limited to, analytic and continental
philosophy.

Fluency in Dutch (C2) is a strong advantage for this position.

The
positions
The Philosophy Department at Tilburg University seeks to
appoint four philosophers at the level of Assistant Professor
(Dutch: UD Filosofie). All four positions include teaching (60
%) research responsibilities (30-40%) as well as management or
academic citizenship tasks (0-10 %). Teaching responsibilities
include coordination of 4-5 courses per year (2-3 per
semester) at both the Bachelor and Master levels. An important
portion of these tasks involves teaching philosophy to (often)
large classes of non-philosophy students at Bachelor level.
Given the Department’s overall teaching needs, societal
embeddedness, and other responsibilities, two of these
positions will be filled by a candidate with fluency in Dutch
(C2 level). All successful candidates are expected to have
basic Dutch proficiency (A2 level) at some point during their
contract period if they aspire to a permanent position. As
many courses are taught in English, all candidates must have a
good command of English from the start and C2 level in writing
and speaking in English must be obtained within two years.
If not already acquired, successful candidates are expected to
acquire a University Teaching Qualification (BKO). Tilburg
University offers courses for acquiring this certification. It
is welcomed if the candidates are prepared to move to (the
vicinity of) Tilburg. Successful candidates must remain at
least 80% of their working days in the Netherlands.
The
Department
The Department of Philosophy (DFI) at Tilburg University is
both an important center of academic teaching and
internationally recognized for its research. It offers a
lively, amicable and stimulating teaching and research
environment. The department provides a supportive, collegial
environment free from the (unhealthy) climate of competition
that has become the standard in academia.
Philosophical research at Tilburg is often done in an
interdisciplinary framework. Research is organized in two
groups: TiLPS (Tilburg Center for Moral Philosophy,
Epistemology and Philosophy of Science) and PHC&E
(Philosophy of Humanity, Culture, and Ethics).
Employment
terms and conditions
The positions will be ranked in the Dutch university job
ranking system (UFO) as assistant professor 2 (“universitair
docent 2”). The starting gross salary for a full-time
appointment is (minimally) € 3.746,- up to (maximally) €
5.127,- per month (max € 71.552,- all in per year). The start
of the employment is negotiable, preferably 1 October, 2021.
Successful candidates receive a contract for four or five
years. Whether the appointment can be extended permanently
after this period will depend on the candidate’s proven
capacities in teaching, research, and the organizational and
financial situation of the Department. Their progress towards
fluency in Dutch at B1 level, to be attained after 7 years or
so, is also a relevant criterion for the decision on the
permanent contract.
Tilburg University is rated among the top of Dutch employers
and has excellent terms of employment, such as a holiday
allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (annually),
an options model and reimbursement of moving expenses.
Candidates from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a
tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The
university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf.
The Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences will
provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation. The
collective labor agreement of the Dutch Universities applies.
