Understanding public data: experts, decisions, epistemic
values.
Call for three post-doc positions
Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa
Scuola IMT Alti Studi Lucca
Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia
A joint SNS/IMT/IUSS project, co-ordinated by Scuola Normale,
will explore the epistemological framework underlying public
decision-making when confronted with complex scientific data.
Logic, epistemology, philosophy of science and critical thinking
can substantially contribute to issues concerning reasoning in
social setting, belief revision and merging, expert choice,
decision-making in uncertainty conditions, the epistemology of
trust, and understanding of complex data.
The three post-docs will take part in a highly
multi-disciplinary project in close cooperation with their
respective supervisors and research teams, within a network of
three among Italy's Schools for Advanced Studies.
Research at SNS will focus on themes at the crossroads of logic
(especially, proof-theory), formal modelling in social sciences,
and formal epistemology. Topics include group deliberation,
belief revision and merging, judgment and preference
aggregation, multi–agent non-monotonic reasoning, multi-agent
epistemic and deontic logic.
Grant is for one year, renewable for
a second year.
Research at IMT will focus on models of cognition and rational
decision-making at the crossroads of philosophy of science,
formal epistemology, and cognitive science. Topics include:
theories of rationality, probabilistic and causal reasoning,
Bayesian approaches, scientific models, expert opinion and
data, heuristics and biases, nudging and boosting, science
communication and public understanding of science.
Research at IUSS will focus on the epistemology of
understanding and reasoning when confronted with
complex/incomplete data and high-stake decisions. Topics
include: logical reasoning and critical thinking in informed
decision-making; rational choice, risk and uncertainty;
logical and epistemological pluralism in the construction of
public opinion; the influence of technological aids in choice
architecture; the reliability of intuitions and emotional
states in the reception of public decisions; the epistemic
values underlying reputation and trust. Grant is for one year, renewable for
a second year.
