Visiting Fellowship at the Institute for Ethics in AI, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford, in 2025-26

Closing date for applications: noon on Wednesday, 4th December 2024.

Further details are available on this webpage leading to the application form

Particulars: The Institute for Ethics in AI at the University of Oxford proposes to elect three Visiting Fellows for the academic year 2025-26. The Visiting Fellowship is intended to offer an established scholar or practitioner in an AI-related field the opportunity to engage in a project related to the ethics of Artificial Intelligence. The length of tenure of the fellowship is one academic term (three months). Applications are encouraged from candidates from all countries and all universities. Applications are particularly encouraged from under-represented groups within their respective disciplines.

In making selections, the Institute will generally give preference to individuals who would particularly benefit from the opportunity to spend time in Oxford to pursue their proposed research project, and would find it difficult to do so without the support of a Visiting Fellowship.

Visiting Fellows will be expected to participate in the academic life of the Institute and the University through, for example, lectures, seminars, and workshops. They are expected to be residents in Oxford throughout the term, attend Institute events, present their research, and engage intellectually with colleagues in the Institute and the wider university. The benefits attached to the Visiting Fellowship are:

•             Up to nine weeks of free accommodation in Oxford (including family accommodation where needed).

•             Economy airfare for the individual fellow.

•             £500 networking allowance.

•             Access to the Ethics in AI Institute, including desk space and use of the refreshment facilities.

•             University Card for access to the Philosophy and Theology Faculties' Library and the Bodleian Libraries.

•             An Oxford IT account giving access to all available electronic databases.

•             An Oxford University email address.

•             Opportunity to attend seminars and lectures and to meet colleagues and students.

•             Subscription to the Philosophy Faculty notices mailing list for information on events happening within the Faculty and elsewhere.

It is anticipated that the Institute will proceed to elections in January 2025, and the successful applicants will take up their Fellowships on or after 1st October 2025. The Home Office requires that all visiting academics demonstrate that they have appropriate permission to carry out the activities that they are involved in. This may entail obtaining a relevant Visa and ATAS certification. Please refer to the University Staff Immigration Team website for further information: https://staffimmigration.admin.ox.ac.uk/visitor-visas.   All data supplied by applicants will be used only to determine their suitability for the post and will be held in accordance with the principles of the Data Protection Act 2018.
