Dear Colleagues,

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law in Freiburg, Germany is proud to announce a new call for applications for the Barbara Huber Scholarship Program — a unique opportunity for outstanding researchers from around the world to advance science in the fields of criminology, public security, criminal law, and fundamental legal research. Our research approaches enable us to address current security-relevant issues from a basic research perspective, analytically, and with an eye to influencing legal policy.

Who can apply?

Early-career researchers, postdocs, and established scholars from international research institutions with an innovative, high-impact research project that contributes to scientific progress by introducing new perspectives, research questions, or findings.

    → €3,200 (professors & experienced researchers)
  • Additional grants available for academic events or research activities in Germany or Europe

Why apply?
Freiburg is not just a research hub — it’s a dynamic, international city. Nestled in the trinational border region (Germany, France, Switzerland), it offers a rich academic environment, exceptional quality of life, and strong research networking opportunities.

Honoring a Legacy
This scholarship honors Barbara Huber (1935–2018), a pioneering legal scholar and expert in English law and the broader common law legal system. Her legacy of comparative law research lives on through this program.
