University College Dublin (UCD) School of Philosophy MA and PhD Scholarships
UCD School of Philosophy offers the following PhD and MA scholarships
and entrance awards:
1. PhD Scholarships
UCD School offers up to four PhD scholarships consisting of:
* Fee remission of up to €7,130 per annum for four years subject to
satisfactory progress each year
* An entrance award of up to €2000 for the academic year of entry only
* Opportunities for teaching and research assistantship remunerated at
the University’s hourly tutorial rate.
2. MA Scholarships
Jean Hogan MA Memorial Scholarship
The School of Philosophy has introduced an annual scholarship in memory
of one of our MA students who passed away recently. Jean Hogan was an
outstanding student who overcame very difficult personal circumstances
to do the MA.
The scholarship is a fee waiver up to the value of EU
fees of €10,100.
The scholarship is open to anyone applying for an MA
in Philosophy,
Philosophy and Public Affairs, Philosophy and
Literature, Consciousness
and Embodiment, Contemporary European
Philosophy, Ethics: Theory and
Practice.
How to Apply: Please apply online at www.ucd.ie/apply. MA applicants
who
wish to be considered for this award will be asked to specify this
in
their personal statements submitted with their MA application. The
successful applicant will have an outstanding academic track record to
date. The selection criterion for the scholarship will be the quality
of this track record, determined by the information provided in the
candidate’s application for the MA.
Newman MA Scholarship
The School is pleased to announce a Newman Scholarship for students
wishing to enrol on the MA in Philosophy (General Programme) and write
their minor dissertation on an aspect of the work or legacy of John
Henry Newman. John Henry Newman (1801-1890) was a leading intellectual,
religious thinker, philosopher and literary figure whose works
include
The Idea of a University (1852), An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of
Assent
(1870), and Apologia Pro Vita Sua (1864). Newman was the founder
of the
Catholic University of Ireland in 1851, which was refounded in
1908 as
University College Dublin.
The scholarships will provide a significant
contribution to the cost of
tuition fees (minimum 50% and up to a
possible 100% to a maximum
of €10,100). Scholarships are open to Irish,
EU and international
applicants. The scholarships are endowed by the
Newman Foundation.
How to Apply: Please apply online to the MA in Philosophy (General
Programme). In addition to formally applying for admission to the
programme, applicants are asked to email a brief description of their
interest in Newman's work and the MA project they wish to undertake to
the Graduate Administrator, Gillian Johnston (<gillian....@ucd.ie>).
UCD School of Philosophy also accepts applications to its taught MA/MSc
Programme. The School offers taught one-year MAs in:
*Philosophy (General Programme)
*Contemporary European Philosophy
*Philosophy of Mind and Embodied Cognition
*Philosophy and Literature
*Philosoph and Public Affairs
*Ethics: Theory and Practice
*Cognitive Science (MSc)
The closing date for receipt of the completed online applications to
the MA and PhD programmes and the scholarships is the 30th of May 2026
for a start in September 2026.
Candidates who wish to apply to the PhD programme for a start in January
2027 must do so by 30th of October 2026.
All PhD applications for the September start will be considered for a
scholarship and applicants
will be informed by Friday 19th July 2026.

Agnes Cuming and the Royal Institute of
Philosophy annual lectures,
bringing world-leading philosophers to UCD,
fortnightly invited speaker seminars,
large-scale international
conferences and thematic workshops, weekly
discussion groups and
reading groups, postgraduate conferences and
workshops organised by
students. The International Journal of Philosophical
Studies and the
postgraduate journal Perspectives are edited by the School
