Admission Requirements: PhD degree in Philosophy or Linguistics
To be considered, a candidate must have a degree in Argumentation Theory, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, or Philosophy of Science. At least one article published in a peer-reviewed, indexed journal in a relevant area is necessary. Strong and demonstrable expertise in the areas investigated in the project (argumentative dialogues, natural language semantics, inference to the best explanation) will be an extra asset. Fluent English is strictly necessary, while knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese is an advantage, given the data used in the project.
Following the rules of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT):
a) The doctoral degree must have been obtained within the last 3 years, counting from the application deadline (so, between 3 May 2018 and 2 May 2021);
b) The PhD must have been obtained in a different host institution (outside the Nova Institute of Philosophy).
The successful candidate will work as part of the project “ANTIDOTE: ArgumeNtaTIon-Driven explainable artificial intelligence fOr digiTal mEdicine” (CHIST-ERA/0002/2019), an international consortium managed from the University of Cote d’Azur, France, and including partners in Spain, Italy and Belgium. The Portuguese part of the Project, led by Marcin Lewinski and Erich Rast, is developed in Lisbon at the Reasoning and Argumentation Lab (ArgLab) of the Nova Institute of Philosophy and is supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
Given ArgLab’s tasks in the broader consortium, the post-doc is expected to apply concepts and methods from argumentation studies and natural language semantics to study the nature of explanations, as manifested in argumentative discussions, with applications in the context of AI-supported medical diagnosis. Work towards at least three publications on the topic, possibly co-authored with other members of the project team, is expected. S/he is also expected to actively participate in the international meetings of the consortium, as well as project meetings and other events at the ArgLab (such as the regular “ArgLab Research Colloquium” and “ArgLab Open Seminar”), cooperate with the members of the consortium in France, Spain, Italy and Belgium, help in the organization of talks, conferences and seminars.
Non-Portuguese citizens must reside within Portugal and work exclusively within the project during the grant duration.
