The Parmenidean Ascent: Substance  

This paper explores the surprising implications of a widely accepted explanatory demand at the heart of the notion of substance or being. The explanatory demand can be put in the form of this question: What is it in virtue of which a substance is a substance? Aristotle, Descartes and Leibniz all endorse this demand, yet each of them – in different ways, as I show – fails to meet it.  I unearth the source of this common failure in the commitment of all or most theories of substance to a vicious regress of relations, a regress of a kind that is articulated in F.H. Bradley's much maligned but important work on relations. I defend Bradley's understanding of the viciousness of this regress and show how it undermines almost all accounts of substance.  I close by arguing that the only way out of this difficulty is to make what I call a Parmenidean Ascent with regard to substance – i.e., to adopt an extreme form of monism that eliminates any distinctions among or within substances.  

MICHAEL DELLA ROCCA is Professor of Philosophy at Yale University. He is the author of Spinoza (Routledge, 2008), of Representation and the Mind-Body Problem in Spinoza (Oxford, 1996) and of numerous articles on Early Modern Philosophy, Contemporary Metaphysics, and Philosophy of Mind.

שפרינגר לא שחררה שום ספר!! אלה הם ספרים פרוצים ומדובר באתר של האקרים. האינטרנט מלא בספרים אקדמיים פרוצים שניתן להוריד אותם חינם.  

האקרים נוהגים לפרוץ ספרים אקדמיים שהם יקרים ובכלל ספרים. פרופסורים שמרוויחים טוב באקדמיה יכולים לממן ספרים אקדמיים מתקציב מחקר ולא צריכים להוריד ספרים פרוצים!!

האגודה להיסטוריה ופילוסופיה של המדעים לא יודעת לזהות מאגרי מידע ואתרים של האקרים? למה היא משתפת רשימה של ספרים פרוצים שמקורה באתר של האקרים?

ללמד את האגודה מידענות, יסודות האינטרנט, ויסודות זכויות יוצרים??

גלי - תודה על המידע.  אני חושב שאת צודקת. מיהרתי לשתף מבלי לשים לב  שלא מדובר במתנת  חג המולד  של תאגיד-הענק Springer לחובבי המתמתיקה באשר הם, אלא  למרבה הבושה, מצעד בפרהסיה של פרוצים ופרוצות ממאגרי מידע מפוקפקים.   Mia Culpa. טעיתי, שגיתי, הדבקתי והכפשתי את שמם הטוב של עמיתי הפרופסורים שמרוויחים טוב באקדמיה ומממנים ספרים אקדמיים מתקציב מחקריהם. לא נותר לי אלא  להתנצל בפני כל מי שפגעתי בו, לקחת אחריות, ולהתפטר מיידית מכל תפקידיי באגודה.
