Nisbet PhD Scholarship in the Philosophy of Education
The University of Glasgow invites applicants for the Nisbet PhD Scholarship in the Philosophy of Education, for doctoral projects starting in October 2026. The award will be tenable for three years and will cover Home fees and an annual maintenance grant in
line with UKRI stipends.
Proposals are invited for projects in any area of philosophy of education. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

Individual autonomy and education

Justice and fairness in education
-
Emerging technologies and future education
-
The cultivation of virtue and character through education
-
Epistemology of education
-
Education in an age of conflicting cultures
-
Philosophical education in the classrook and beyond
The scholarship is available as a full-time +3 (3 year) PhD programme only. The programme will commence in October 2026. The full funding package includes:

An annual maintenance grant (stipend) at the
UKRI rate;

Fees at the standard home tuition fee rate;

Students can also draw on a Research Training Support Grant, usually up to a maximum of £940 per year.
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Applicants will have a demonstratable interest in the topic area under investigation;

Applicants will have a good undergraduate degree and either have, or be working towards, a Masters degree (at Distinction or Merit), with a demonstratable track record of study in philosophy;

Applicants must be classed as
Home students.
