Modern Natural Philosophy: Margaret Cavendish and Anne Conway
Estudios de Filosofía
No 75, January-june 2027
Philosophy journal
In the 17th century, the philosophy of nature experienced significant development. Several female thinkers took part in this phenomenon, which was closely linked to the substantial changes brought about by the scientific revolution. Paving the way for other women philosophers was the work of pioneers such as Margaret Cavendish (1623–1673) and Anne Conway (1631–1679), who succeeded in writing and publishing works of natural philosophy. Their achievement not only makes them representatives of a lesser-known modernity—one shaped by women—but also places them within a long tradition of dialogue and exchange with other researchers devoted to the study of the natural world and its central questions: life, movement, time, matter, the vacuum, and the relationship between body and spirit. This special issue will address these topics, the definition of the method of this philosophical discipline, the relationship between reason and imagination, as well as the intellectual exchange both philosophers had with major philosophical figures of the 17th century and their influence on later thinkers. In this way, it offers an interpretation of early modernity that highlights the valuable contributions of two great women philosophers to this field.
