We are
delighted to inform
that the SATU
Presidents’ Forum 2022
JRS Sustainability
Webinar Series will be
held from 8 July to 2
August 2022, featuring
6 sharing sessions by
the investigator teams
first matched via the
Joint Research Scheme.
The first two sessions
are scheduled for 8
July (Fri) and 12 July
(Tue) respectively.
Since 2012, the JRS
has served as a
matching platform for
scholars from
different SATU member
universities to
connect with
like-minded
researchers and form
research
collaborations
together. The
collaborations
symbolize joint-effort
in achieving research
excellence across
cultures, the
experience of which
should be shared to a
broader audience. SATU
therefore launched the
JRS Webinar Series in
2021, where research
teams of selected JRS
projects were invited

CONFERENCE: "Non-Western
Approaches in
Environmental
Humanities"
(11-13 July)
|
|
|
The main aim
of the conference
(which is correlated
with the topics of the
project “Non-anthropo-
centric Cultural
Subjectivity” realized
as part of the
“Excellence Initiative
– Research University”
programme at the
University of Warsaw)
is to reflect on
theoretical frameworks
in environmental
humanities which have
emerged as alternative
or complementary to
western approaches. We
would like to support
theoretical
reflections concerning
the relationship
between human beings
and the environ- ment
that have been
developed in
non-western cultural
contexts. By helping
to determine the
problems crucial for
“non-western”
environmental
humanities, the
conference will also
be a starting point
for further
cooperation and
research.
We understand the
adjective
“non-western” in two
ways. In one general
sense, the term simply
implies alternatives
to the mainstream
theoretical frameworks
deriving especially
from North America and
Western Europe.
“Non-western” in this
sense includes the
trends and theoretical
conceptions developed
by researchers
representing different
geographical and
historical locations
as well as different
cultural traditions,
for example the Global
South, indigenous and
non-white cultures. A
narrower understanding
of “non-western”
suggests research
perspectives applied
on local scales.
Therefore, one of the
conference’s main aims
is to concentrate on
the Eastern European
context. This focus
entails the
presentation of
research concerning
the environmental
history of Eastern
Europe as well as
attempting to work out
research frameworks
reflecting the local,
Eastern European
perspectives on the
relationship between
human beings and their
environments.

| NEW BOOK! "THE POLITICAL
PHILOSOPHY OF
AI: AN
INTRODUCTION"
by Mark
Coeckelbergh |
|
|
Political
issues people care
about such as
racism, climate
change, and
democracy take on
new urgency and
meaning in the
light of
technological
developments such
as AI. How can we
talk about the
politics of AI
while moving
beyond mere
warnings and easy
accusations?This
is the first
accessible
introduction to
the political
challenges related
to AI. Using
political
philosophy as a
unique lens
through which to
explore key
debates in the
area, the book
shows how various
political issues
are already
impacted by
emerging AI
technologies: from
justice and
discrimination to
democracy and
surveillance.
Revealing the
inherently
political nature
of technology, it
offers a rich
conceptual toolbox
that can guide
efforts to deal
with the
challenges raised
by what turns out
to be not only
artificial
intelligence but
also artificial
power.This timely
and original book
will appeal to
students and
scholars in
philosophy of
technology and
political
philosophy, as
well as tech
developers,
innovation
leaders, policy
makers, and anyone
interested in the
impact of
technology on
society.

| NEW BOOK! "HUMANITIES AND
ARTIFICIAL
INTELLIGENCE"
edited by
Freddypaul
Grunert et eal.
|
|
|
|
The
transversal character
of artificial
intelligence and the
related social,
economic, ethical,
legal and cultural
impacts call for
interdisciplinary
discussions that go
beyond the purely
technological angle.
This is the focus of
the present book, to
present the result of
interdisciplinary
discussions on
artificial
intelligence and
humanity carried out
at the Centre for
Advanced Studies,
Joint Research Centre,
European Commission.
The manuscript
presents a collection
of thoughts on the
topic from different
angles and
disciplines: from
emotions to
creativity, from
feminism to the
environment. Many of
the topics discussed
in this book are
central to the
European policy
frameworks addressing
both the development
and use of AI and the
production, sharing,
and use of data that
is underpinning many
AI developments. The
book reflects the
joint reflection of
artists, historians,
sociologists,
scientists and
computer scientists to
rediscover what Ties
us Humans together
(hence the title) over
what divides us. We
believe the
contributions included
in this book are an
important first step
in this collective
endeavour.

| NEW BOOK! "PHILOSOPHY OF
POSTHUMAN ART"
by Stefan L.
Sorgner |
|
|
|
Aesthetic
reflections by various
members of the
Frankfurt school have
dominated the art
world many decades.
Sorgner shows that
they introduced a
paternalistic logic in
the field of
aesthetics while
attempting to overcome
paternalism. His art
philosophical
alternative reveals
the option creating
non-totalitarian total
works of art. The wide
spectrum of posthuman
artworks reveals
immense diversity of
nontotalitarian total
works of art. “A
deeply considered
survey of
the posthuman future
of art. Sorgner’s
philosophy of
posthumanism provides
a path away from
the dominant
20th-century
aesthetics that still
inform our conception
of art today. Through
the innovative concept
of the ‘twist,’
Sorgner’s encyclopedic
text frames
posthumanism as the
found of an
anti-totalitarian
future of art.”

| NEW BOOK! "THE CREATIVE
ANIMAL" by
Roberto
Marchesini |
|
|
This book
deals with the theme
of creativity in the
animal world,
conceived as a basic
function for
adapting to specific
situations and as a
source of
innovations and
inventions.
Creativity is a
fundamental resource
for the individual
who always has a
leading role in
conduct. To explain
creativity, the book
focuses on the
concept of animal
subjectivity,
providing a new
explanatory model of
behavior capable of
overcoming the image
of the animal moved
by automatisms. This
model does not use
consciousness as a
necessary condition,
but is based: 1) on
affective
components, such as
behavioral motives,
and 2) cognitive, as
tools used by the
subject to carry out
his purposes.
Particular attention
is paid to the
learning processes
showing the
subjective character
of the experience.
One topic addressed
is the role of
creativity in the
evolution of living
beings: how an
invention, by
modifying the niche
characteristics, is
able to change the
selective pressures
and the trajectory
of phylogeny.
Roberto Marchesini
explains that
creativity is a
factor that is
anything but rare or
exceptional in the
animal world—it
constitutes a
fundamental quality
for many aspects of
animal life.

Over the past years
the rapid
technological
improvements,
innovations and use of
digital applications
have transformed us
into living and
working in virtual
environments. We are
now facing 'oceans' of
big data, inaugurating
what has been called
the “Digital
Anthropocene.” Gaining
momentum since around
the 1950s, the Digital
Humanities (previously
referred to as
Humanities Computing
or Computing in the
Humanities) “is a
diverse and still
emerging field that
encompasses the
practice of humanities
research in and
through information
technology, and the
exploration of how the
humanities may evolve
through their
engagement with
technology, media, and
computational
methods.” As we move
from the first wave of
qualitative data to
the second, which is
apt to be more
critical,
interpretative and
empirical with the use
of toolkits and
services (Presner,
2010), the rise of a
third wave introduces
entirely new
interdisciplinary
paradigms, convergent
fields, new
methodologies and
concepts as well as
new models and
patterns while working
on cultural texts.
