Programme
Matinée (10h–12h)
Tim O'Connor :
“Integrated Emergent Dualism and the Prospects for Conscious AI”
Résumé :
According to Integrated Emergent Dualism (IED), human consciousness is a non-physical phenomenon that partly grounds intentionality and understanding (emergence), while being both causally dependent on, and functionally bound up with, the informational states
and activity of the brain (integration). The conscious 'subject' is not a self-contained entity/substance but instead is merely a fragment of a coupled neural-conscious system that is the core of the embodied human person. I will describe and motivate this
position. I will then explore the question of what constraints IED places on the kind of AI systems that might manifest conscious understanding – or even volition, thereby satisfying the classical definition of personhood.
Après-midi (14h–16h)
