Monographic issue at Enrahonar (Universitat Autὸnoma de Barcelona): ‘Lyotard, another hundred years more’.
One hundred years after his birth, Jean-François Lyotard (1924-1998) is still remembered as a great guru of post-modernity. Unfortunately, this simple ascription has obscured many of the contributions of a thinker who has yet to be rediscovered. Herman Parret's
edition of his writings on contemporary art (2009-2013), the recent research on his exhibition Les Immatériaux and the theoretical work that is currently being carried out in the United Kingdom and the United States on his philosophical legacy demonstrate
the lack of knowledge we still have of a thinker we thought we had already overcome. This monograph aims to join this collective work of reflection through the following question: how can Lyotard help us to think differently about our present, our past and,
of course, our future?
In addressing this subject, there are three possible paths or routes to take: firstly, we can think about how Lyotard's ideas maintain a certain relevance in our philosophical present through concepts such as figure, dissimulation, sublime, différend or anamnesis;
secondly, we can explore how his thought survived through some thinkers who knew how to think of his philosophy as something independent of postmodernity; and thirdly, it is possible to rethink the role that Lyotard's ideas had in his own context by analysing
the debates that were reflected in his texts and trying to think how they exceeded the solipsism of the Parisian microcosm to be exported to other parts of the world. In this sense, although papers of any nature, methodology, discipline and subject area may
be submitted for this monograph, as long as they are related to the subject (Lyotard), some of the suggested lines of work are the following:
-
Ethics, aesthetics and politics in Lyotard's thought.
-
Lyotard's thought in the face of the challenges of the 21st century: gender, technology, climate emergency, etc.
-
Lyotard's thought in dialogue with the history of philosophy.
-
Lyotard in context: from militancy in Algeria to French post-structuralism.
-
Lyotard's influence on contemporary art and visual studies.
Manuscripts will be accepted in Spanish, Catalan, English and French. The deadline for submission is 1 September 2025. The issue will be published in the first half of 2026. For any questions, please contact the guest editor:
