Comrades and Allies,
The murder of Michael Brown by police in Ferguson, MO set off the longest period of protest against police brutality. Years of pent up anger from the oppression of an entire people exploded on the streets. But racism and police brutality are not unique to this small town in Missouri. Rather, the entire history of capitalism in the US and elsewhere is founded on the oppression and exploitation of Africans and African-Americans. People living under these conditions of poverty and racism have the right to rebel. But looking at much of the mainstream media, what you see is demonization of the protest as looters and fueled by “outside agitators.” The disproportionate response from the cops using military grade equipment led to what can only be called an occupation of neighborhood in the US.
Come to a meeting of the International Socialist Organization featuring Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, professor of African-American History at Princeton University and long time activist against racist injustice to discuss the history of racism, Ferguson, and the fight against racism and capitalism today.
