Dear Dumisani Ndhlovu,
Let me start by apologising for the very slow response to your request concerning the formation of an Internet Society Malawi Chapter.
However, thank you very much for your expression of interest in staring an Internet Society Chapter in Malawi. As you probably know, there is currently no Internet Society Chapter in Malawi, however, the good news is that there is a group of people (copied) in Malawi who are interested in forming a Chapter. I'd suggest you get in touch with them to discuss how you can combine efforts to successfully establish a Chapter in Malawi. The group has put in place a Google Group to discuss the Chapter Formation process at:
We encourage you to reach out to them as they are best placed to give you an update so that you can discuss on how to best work together on this project.
Let me also use this opportunity to give you some background on the Chapter formation process:
As you probably know, Internet Society Chapters bring together individual members of the Internet Society, like yourself, who share an interest and belief in the Internet Society’s principles and mission and who are committed to furthering the Internet Society’s goals and objectives within your geographic or special interest area. You can read more about Internet Society Chapters, their role and function on the Internet Society website at: http://www.internetsociety.org/who-we-are/chapters.
Having said that, every Chapter is different given their very diverse local contexts and needs. Defining what the main Internet related issues are in your location and how the future Chapter plans to work on them is actually part of the Chapter formation process. What is very important to the Internet Society is that the Chapter includes people representing the various Internet related stakeholder groups within the area the Chapter plans to cover.
In order to join or start a local Chapter formation group, you might want to discuss with others some of the following questions:
1. What would you like to achieve with the Chapter and how would you maintain the activities?
2. Are there any specific priorities for the Chapter that you have in mind?
3. What are the interests of your local Internet community?
Here are some links that might be useful to you and anyone interested in forming a chapter: in particular, please read the Chapter Application process:
· Internet Society Chapter guide: http://www.internetsociety.org/who-we-are/chapters
· The Chapter application process is described here: http://www.internetsociety.org/who-we-are/chapters/start
· All other information related to Chapter formation: http://www.internetsociety.org/node/11657
· Chapter Toolkits on e.g. Mobilizing Volunteers, Educating and Influencing Policymakers, Net Neutrality: http://www.internetsociety.org/who-we-are/chapters/lead/chapter-resources
The minimum number of Chapter members is 25.
Please note that the Chapter formation process can take time. It is very important to have participation and agreement from among many different types of stakeholders in an inclusive way.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at saeg...@isoc.org
Best regards,
Christine
