Michael,

Thank you for an interesting article!  I think there could be a larger discussion around it. I am encouraged by the interest in Neurofeedback from a diffusion of innovation perspective, as my dissertation was on it.

I have some constructive critiques for the authors if they would like to reach out, as this is not the first research in the area.  There are complex issues beyond the viewpoints those who provide neurofeedback for acceptance as it exists in a larger medical and societal structure.

Also, neurofeedback is in early adoption phase, and some of the conclusions of this article (based on the beliefs of Neurofeedback providers) are flawed and were not pushed back on in the article.  It is important not to perpetuate them by not pointing out where they are incorrect compared to the larger beliefs of the medical profession as a whole and society.

This is very important research and I applaud the author(s) interest.  Thanks for sharing.

Here is a link my dissertation on the topic, it is open access.  I also presented it at ISNR.

Best,

Mark Trullinger

Neurofeedback has been available to practitioners since the advent of personal computers in the 1980’s. It’s been readily available for 45 years, at least.

Right, Peggy, and some started doing NFB even before there were personal computers.  I started in the mid-1970s with an EEG machine.  It's amazing that 50 years later, though, we're still around but continuing to struggle for recognition and acceptance.  I'm pretty sure we haven't identified why yet.  As a strong believer in personal responsibility, I have to ask what are we doing that we shouldn't be or what are we not doing that we should be.  I'm still trying to figure that out for myself.

Thanks, Rob.  I hope you and others know that I was making no implications regarding ISNR and the long list of folks who have sacrificed and worked tirelessly for the field and community's benefit.  I have tremendous appreciation for all of you.  I do think we've been hindered some by premature certainty about the mechanisms behind our results.  I'm glad to hear about the 5 year plan and will be submitting ideas.  I'm fully aware I haven't figured it out, but I have learned some things that haven't worked.
My best to all.  Ed Hamlin

It seems to me that neurofeedback needs good PR. Whether it’s expert interviews in major news media, celebrity endorsements, social media influencers, or some other form, the field needs to be in the public eye in positive ways that people seek out the term and then find ISNR or other local providers.

Psychotherapy has been very prevalent in popular movies, series, and social commentary which took away the stigma. I’m sure this is one factor of many for the overall increased acceptance of therapy, but I believe an important one.

As you all can probably tell I am mortified by the lay people who just set up shop with a machine.
Are there any ongoing press releases we can do for consumers to be aware of this?

Pam, it's wonderful that you are providing free education.
I also created a free resource: a 4 hour review of the BCIA curriculum for Neurofeedback.
It's completely free, no strings, no forms to fill out.

Hello Pamela,
I see that you went to Nairobi last year! That is where I grew up and all my family is still in Kenya.
Were you able to get any neurofeedback centers to open up there in Nairobi? My sister had a stroke and I have been looking to see if anyone is providing care and I do not see any NFB providers!
That is so wonderful that you are doing that:)
Thank you,
Divya

As ISNR moves forward I think it would be beneficial to incorporate a more central social justice lens as a key component in persuading/promoting why it is both effective and should be more widely adopted.

As many of us know, particularly among marginalized populations, there are many systems in place from the cost of education/equipment to the 3rd party payer system (who frequently imposes policies lacking evidence) that prevent marginalized people access to this intervention.

And yet for people and communities who are routinely over diagnosed with mental health labels, over medicated, over represented the criminal justice system, and possessing every reason to distrust the healthcare system, neurofeedback, when used correctly/ethically, can be the bridge to healing through its inherently collaborative and client/patient centered design.

I would love to see ISNR explore more ways of supporting providers who are choosing to find planful and ethical ways to push back on the systems that currently exist in order to provide neurofeedback to these people and communities in the interest of providing the best client centered care. I truly appreciate the work the board already does to understand and navigate these systems. I think the social justice lens may be another asset in further understanding and navigating them.

Thank you to the board for your many hours of service and collaboration.

Divya,

Hello. And thank you so much for reaching out. Yes. I went to Nairobi Kenya in December 2023 and worked with the most wonderful group of clinical psychologists in Nairobi. I would love to go back and to train the same group in Neurofeedback following my three hour lecture on applied neuroscience. I worked with a gentleman by the name of Shitemi Bright. He runs an organization in Nairobi called Mental 360. Have you heard of it?

I invited all of the Psychologists to get a visa and come to the United States and complete 120 hour training program that would qualify them for BCIA. However, given our current political situation, I don’t think it would be easy for them to get a visa and I know the financial situation would be difficult therefore I would love to go back and train Any number of clinical providers in how to do Neurofeedback.

If I make the trip again, I would also go to Mwanza where there is a medical school being created by a colleague of mine and do a similar training that would take a couple of weeks. If you send me a message directly, I would be happy to discuss further.

You are welcome to reach out through my website, Facebook, messenger, or phone. My number is 603-231-2630.

I will look forward to talking with you.
