Hello List,

Does anyone know if a transcription exists of the Kauilani (sometimes
recorded as Kaiulani) Portuguese Cemetery in Honolulu?

Several people I am researching are believed to be buried there and
I'm not sure of their dates of death.

Thank you,
Pamela

Hello Island Routes Group,

Does anyone also have any information on the Uluhaimalama Cemetery in Honolulu? My great grandfather, John M Cruz, was buried there in 1968.  I am hoping to find additional genealogy records there. Please and thank you. Terri

Dan: so will we be able to have your assistance in finding out if our ancestors' name(s) are on this list?

Dan,

My wife and I will be fortunate enough to visit Honolulu next week.  We would like to come by and visit your center on Monday or Tuesday.  Are you open to the public?  What is your address and hours?  Is your center like a library where people can come and look things up and do research?

Thanks!!!

Hello Dan,

The names of the ancestors "known" to be buried at Kauilani are:

Manuel Rodrigues Castanha (b. 1848 - d. abt 1935?) and his wife,
Mary (Rodrigues?) Castanha (b. 1853 - d. aft 1935?).  Their son,
Manuel Rodrigues Castanha (b. 1881 - d. abt 1952?) and his wife,
Mary (Rodrigues?) Castanha (b. 1881 - d. aft. 1930?).  Her father,
Manuel da Silva (b. 1852 - d. April 1931) and possibly his wife,
Rita Silva (b. 1860 - d. bef the 1920 census date)

Also looking for
Paulino Franca (b. 1861) and wife, Balbina Conceicao Franca (b. abt 1859) - both still living in 1930 census.
John Gomes Robello (1862 - Dec. 5, 1899) and his wife, Mary (Gomes?) Robello (abt 1861 - Feb 27, 1922).

It is my understanding  that my Rodrigues Castanhos of Madeira became "Castanha" in Hawaii and that my Gomes Rebelos of Madeira became "Robello" in Hawaii.  Of course I would love to be able to look through such a list myself to see if their many children and their families might also have been buried at Kauilani.  Is there a transcription available to researchers who are not in Honolulu?

All help is very much apprecieted,
Pamela

Pamela,  to answer your question about Kaiulani Cemetery...No,   the transcription was given to our society for "safe keeping"  it is not on line.  people who want information request it from us.  we have a database of 261, 600+ Portuguese immigrants and their descendants who came to Hawaii.  if you want information on your family lines,  you need to send your mailing address to PGSH...@hotmail.com.   we do not charge for our service, but do accept donations.  we are non paid volunteers and a non profit organization.  Dan

Terri,  I checked the cemetery listing...no John Cruz.  A project was done in the 1980's which identified individuals that had headstones in the smaller cemeteries on Oahu.  We are checking his obituary for more information.  will keep you informed.  Dan Nelson, Portuguese Genealogical and Historical Society of Hawaii.

Teri,  obit (Honolulu Star Bulletin 18 July 1968 G6):  John M. Cruz, 86, of 504 Kalihi St.  died on July 3 at Queen's Medical Center.  Funeral servies for Mr. Cruz will be at 10:30 AM tomorrow at Uluhaimalama Cemetery.  survivors include 3 sons William, Max, and Zachery; daughter Mrs. Eleanor Dedrick; 7 grandchildren.   As I mentioned before, the 1980's survey did not find a headstone for John.  There are several possibilities,,,he did not have one;  over time the headstone became unreadable; or was removed.    Dan

Dan,

Thanks for looking up this info. A volunteer from RAOGK in Honolulu found this obit and the tombstone in the Uluhaimalama Cemetery. He posted it on Find A Grave. However, that is the only gravestone in that section. Could  other people be buried there with him? How do I find cemetery records of other people buried there? I'm still looking for John's spouse, Rebecca Perry Cruz.

The William Cruz mentioned in the obit is my grandfather. I suspect Max and Zachary were actually John's grandchildren since their birth dates of 1922 and 1923 coincide with John's other son, Max, married to Grace Keaunui in 1921 I have no idea who Eleanor Dedrick is, but I did find Max and Grace had a daughter Grace Evaleilani born in 1925 listed in a Hawaiian newspaper on Ulukau.org. John had two adopted daughters listed in the1930 census that aren't listed in his obit, but then Zachary and Max weren't listed in the 1930 census.

Thank you for all your help. If you come across any more info on the Uluhaimalama Cemetery or any of my Cruz/Perry family, please contact me.

Terri

Teri,  according to the book of cemetery maps, Uluhaimalaha is surrounded by three other cemeteries:  Yee King Tong, Pauoa Chinese Christian and the Church of the Living God.  in addition there are 2 other cemeteries adjoining the previously mentioned  Tong Sing Tong and Ket On.  This results in to 8 different sections for 6 different cemeteries.  Dan

Dan,

Thanks for all the research. Now what do I do? Check each one? Do you know if any records of burials are kept for the Uluhaimalama Cemetery?  If no records were kept or my relatives aren't found there, were records kept for these other cemeteries? You mentioned 6 cemeteries, but mentioned 8 sections. Please explain.

Teri,  two of the cemeteries listed have two sections each.  The only records avaiable to the public are the surveys that were done in the 1980's listing the headstones that were found by the volunteers.  Death certificates usually have the burial site listed.  The Hawaii BOH restricts such info to direct descendants only.  You have to prove it to them.   Dan

Dan,

Thanks for getting back so quickly. Questions:  Why the cemetery sections? Like Catholic and Protestant sections, or Hawaiian and Chinese sections or divisions because of name?  Did you mean DOH, not BOH?  What do I need to prove descendancy? Records proving lineage like copy of my birth certificate, my father's birth certificate, and my grandfather's birth certificate? Do I need to send all copies? How do I find death info for my great grandmother, Rebecca Perry Cruz? How do I find where she was buried? Here spouses and families are usually found together. I'm guessing that's not the case in Hawaii.

Terri

Terri,  two of the Chinese cemeteries had two sections each.  The Hawaii Department of Health has request forms on line at their website.  Their website will provide answers to your questions.  Public records are avaiable to 1949.  After that, one would have to search the newspapers.  Dan

Aloha, Joseph,

Thanks for the heads up re. Find A Grave.  I know there weren't any records for the Kauilani Cemetery when I first posted this message back in January of last year.  I checked again after your note and found listings for several for my people of interest.  A few of them even have photos!  Many thanks to you for that.

Cheers,
Pamela

Do you have names of any of the people? Have you looked at the Find A Grave website for this cemetery. There are currently 333 or so people listed there from this cemetery. I went and too pictures of many tombstones today and if there is one you are trying to find I can go back and look as it is just a few miles from my home. Just let me know and give as many details as you can. Cemetery is not very big, just the size of a medium size house lot, but there are many unmarked graves too.

aloha,

Joseph
