Aloha kākau/Olá a todos

My grandfather gave me a baptismal certificate for his grandfather (my great-great-grandfather). I don't know Portuguese and I can barely recognize some names.  I've attached the record (front and back). I only knew of my great-great-grandfather by his English name, John Martin Perry. His marriage certificate said that he was born in California, so this document came as a surprise. If anyone knows Portuguese or at least can read the handwriting and transcribe it for me (I'll be able to translate it online) that would be most helpful.

Muito obrigado/Mahalo nui loa,
Jacob Perry

Jacob,

There is also a Portuguese Hawaiian Genealogy Group on Facebook with some members very knowledgeable and proficient in the Portuguese languages. I am also interested in seeing what you find out since the Perry name shows up on my Hawaiian side.

Mahalo kākou/Obrigado a todos,

Thank you everybody.  I am an amateur genealogy who got into genealogy from my grandparents (who were genealogists or had a close family member that was). I have record of majority of what genealogy they did and all my research is build from that.

Terri Sager - I don't have a Facebook and I am not going to be able to access that Genealogy Group you mentioned. But if you give me some of your Perry family names, I may be able to establish a connection.

Duane Bitter - Yes, the Portuguese baptismal certificate is in Portuguese and I can't speak Portuguese. The handwriting is also fairly difficult to read, but if you can decipher and make sense of some/most of it that would be very helpful.

Bob Pitta - I look at your website and I can feel that my great-great-grandmother, Maria Pita (Pitta) is in your database, though I can't seem to find her in your website. If you have anymore information, I would love to see it.

Mahalo/Obrigado,
Jacob Perry

Jacob - You are correct;  I don't have Maria Cosme Pitta on my website although I do have her in my database.  You might find the attached interesting.

Aloha Jacob Perry,

Thank you for the invitation to help on my Perry side.

The only confirmed name I have is Rebecca Helen Perry. Her death certificate shows:   Birthplace as Waialua, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii. Birthdate 1874-1878 (age at death "about 62"), Death place at Queen's Hospital, Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii. Death date 20 Sept 1936. Spouse John Cruz of Honolulu.

A marriage certificate shows name as Helen Perry. Date of marriage 27 Jul 1908. Age 30. Nationality Hawaiian. Spouse John Napua (or Nakua) Cruz. Father William Perry of Waianae, Oahu, Hawaii, nationality Hawaiian. Mother no name listed, nationality Hawaiian, deceased.

An obit for Rebecca Helen Cruz lists age as 60, and survivors as "widower John Cruz and several children".  Records indicate a marriage to Leonard Mitchell prior to John Cruz. Otherwise I know of no other information about her or the Perry line.

I hope you can help. Any ideas or other possible leads would be greatly appreciated.  The interest in the St Helena group is because one record shows John Cruz's father from St Helena and another shows his father as British.

Again, thank you for your interest.

Terri Sager

Bob Pitta- I have seen that manifest for the Kumeric and taken it into account. However, I have also found this manifest with Maria Cosme Pitta and Manuel Martins Pereira and some of their kids on the ship Luveric (or Suveric), which are the attached photos. It starts on the bottom of the first one and continues to the second one, this cause some discrepancy because its two different records from two different ships in two different years. So, I'm not sure which one is correct.
Do you have any more information about her ancestry and extended family?

Terri Sager - I have been researching Rebecca Helen Perry, though I can't say that I have found anything very noteworthy yet. I will continue and I get back to you as soon as I find something.

Mahalo,

Jacob - The family booked passage on the Kumeric (looks like Luveric) leaving Madeira on 10 October 1906 but, for some unknown reason, they were scratched from the voyage.  (Notice the thick strike over on their lines.)  They subsequently boarded the Kumeric at Madeira on 1 May 1907 and arrived in Honolulu on 27 June 1907.
