Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) has reduced their Y-DNA 12 marker test from $99 USD down to $39 USD (plus $4 shipping in the US and $6 everywhere else). Rumor has it that this may be their permanent price. But right now, it's advertised as a special.
A Y-DNA test will trace a man's father's father's father's line, or the top of the pedigree chart. If you want to focus on one line only, you need a Y-DNA test. If you are not a male, find a brother, male cousin, or nephew who carries the surname you want to trace.
The Y-DNA 12 is a BASIC test and will give you mostly anthropological info...your haplogroup and where it came out of Africa and where it went in the world.
I don't know if upgrades (12 markers to 37 markers or whatever) will be on sale during the Sizzling Summer Sale or not, but they do have upgrade sales during the year.

Rumor was right. This notification was sent out to Project Administrators from Family Tree DNA (FTDNA):
<<Due to the recent upgrade of our state-of-the-art laboratory, coupled with research and development into increasing lab efficiency, we are able to permanently offer the basic Y-DNA12 test for $49 beginning April 1, 2013. The current sale of Y12 at $39 will end at 11:59PM CDT, March 31,2013. We are also working on bringing down the price of the basic mtDNA test as well; we hope to have that accomplished during the first half of this year.>>

By using autosomal DNA. FTDNA calls this their Family Finder test. It's regularly $289 and when they put it on sale, it's usually $199.
The next sale will most likely be their Sizzing Summer Sale in June or July that that traditionally have. That doesn't mean that they will decide to have a 72 hour sale, a Flash Sale, or a DNA Day sale between now and then.
