I was fortunate enough that my mother bought a copy of the
book "The Potuguese In Hawaii" that was published for the
100th anniversary of the start of the migration.
Unfortunately only 2000 copies were printed in 1978 for the
Centenial edition. I'm not sure if there were other editions
that followed. If you can find a copy in a library, it gives
a concise history of Portugal starting with a short account
with the Roman Empire. It discusses the discovery of the
Azores and Madera.
The authors move into the political and economic conditions
in
portugal when Hawaii was in need of laborors for the
Plantations.
There are interviews with immigrants who tell their story of
their migration.
One of the accounts is from an immigrant who tells his
story, and arriving in Honolulu on the Albergeldie" (May
10,1883). My dad's grandparents (Franciso Frias Lopes)and
family were on this ship. The ship manifest lists the names
and ages of my family. He also talks about his life on the
plantation. I'm not sure if my ancestors went to the same
plantation but I'm sure their life was similar.
There is also a photo of the Portuguese Braves baseball team
around 1925 in Honolulu. My mother's father (Manuel
Martin)is in the photo.
I found the storie's and historical accounts very
interesting and informative. If your library has a copy, you
may want to check this book out.
