Hi, everyone,
I need to get an article from the Maui News archives.  The date of the article is 25 Apr 1908.  It is the obituary of my gggrandfather.  How can I find this newspaper?
Thanks.
Yvonne Silva

Hi Yvonne,

I live in Maui and have found this web site to be useful for resources,

I had just gone to The Kahului Public Library to print my great grandmothers obituary from 1970 (The Honolulu Advertiser) , I had found that they weren't very helpful but its worth a try to call them yourself at #1-808-873-3097.

If I'm not mistaken all newspapers are filed with our local libraries.

You might want to call the Maui News at #1-808-242-6363 about old issues.

Good Luck, Hope this helps,
Harilyn Awai

Yvonne,
Another place would be the Hawaii State Archives.  They may have what you want on microfilm.

Best of luck with your search.

Hi Yvonne,

My Grandfathers last name was Silva too.  I am not sure I have already emailed you this, but I cannot find any information on him.  His name was John or Jack Edward Silva.  He was born on Kauai (Waimea/Makaweli).  He later moved to Maui.  His birthdate acording to records I have found (Census) was Jan or March 1894.  He married my grandmother (Frances P. Evans) and they lived in Paie, Maui, before moving to Kailua Oahu.

By the time I was born he and my grandmother were separated and I always thought he had died.  Otherwise I think I would have asked her about him.  None of my older siblings or even my mom does not know a whole lot about him.  He was my dad's father and my dad died when I was 4, he had 2 siblings one died before I was born and the other disowned himself from the family and lived in Michigan.  He is now deceased himself.

So as far as working on my geneology on my dad's side I am at a road block with my grandfather.  Sorry to have rambled on but if any of these names sound familiar to you will you let me know.

Mahalo,

Mona Kealoha

Mona, Jack Edward Silva's parents were Joseph Mariano Silva and Maria
de Gloria Rapozo. they had 17 children. If you send me your mailing
address, I will print out everything in our data base at the
Portuguese Genealogical and Historical Society here in Honolulu and
send it to you. Aloha Dan Nelson PGHSH volunteer.

Dan Nelson:
Your response to Mona caught my eye. My husband grandmother was Emily
deSilva. She married James Aurndel or Arnold before 1889. Her son, my
husband's grandfather is James Arnold. On his baptismal certificate dated
Oct 1895 from St. Anthony's in Wailuku it says the name of one of the
sponsors is Maria de Gloria, the other is Gilb. Cabral. I know there were
bunches of Silva's and that de Gloria is a common name not really a part of
naming -- but since I'm really a novice at this Portuguese genealogy it was
too much of a coincidence to let slide by. Perhaps the PGHSH has
information that I've not tapped yet?

Thanks
Karen K.
