Subject: James Faria Russo

Hello,

I am looking for information on my grandfather, James A Faria Russo.  He came to Hawaii at 2 years of age with his parents and 4 year old brother and 6 month old sister.  The family surname was Faria.  I believe that they came from Funchal, Madeira Islands aboard the Pricilla.  At some point the surname was changed.  I don't know when and it makes it very difficult to find information.   He had 3 or 4 younger brothers who were born in Hawaii.  His father's name was Antonio Jose de Faria.  His mother's name was Maria (Souza - I believe).  I am hoping to find out where the family lived in Hawaii and how and for whom his father was employed.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

JoAnn,

Here's the family  arrival from the Hawaii Archives site

Take the data and names to the Madeira Regional Archives to find the exit passport .

The site is currently down, so check later for it

Thank you so much for all this info.  It is wonderful to have.  How would I go about finding out or who would I contact to see where they lived in Hawaii?  I think the oldest child, Joao, died there.  I know that other children were born in Hawaii- George Charles Faria Russo 1884 approximately, Antonio Ernest Faria Russo 1883, William Albert Faria 1882.

I've been silently watching to see if my great-grandfather, Ernest Russo, born in Honolulu, late 1800's, died in Richmond CA, 1960's, would appear.  It appears he has but I need to verify.  I have his death certificate in my files and will check to see if these are the same person.

Thanks,

Lee,

I see a few name changes for him. On the WW1 draft card he's Ernest Anton Faria Russo. On the 1920 census , he's Henry AF Russo.

After searching out his brothers, George's record gives the mothers maiden name, Souza.  I'm quite sure this is the Faria family found in Newport Rhode Island on the 1900 census with Mary Faria head. All sons George, Ernest, William born in
Hawaii.

California death index entries:

RUSSO ERNEST J 1915 01 17 MALE CA CONTRA COSTA 1970 01 23 566182389 55 3830837
RUSSO ERNEST F 1883 03 22 MALE HI CONTRA COSTA 1975 01 10 545124660 91 4716444
RUSSO MILLIE FARIA 1883 03 10 GONSALVES FEMALE RE CONTRA COSTA 1948 04 03 65 810459

RUSSO GEORGE C 1884 09 25 SOUZA RUSSO MALE HI ALAMEDA 1948 02 17 63 810457

I'll look around for the marriage infor of the parents.

My ggrandfather's brother, Jose do Espirito Santo (Joe Santos, Jr.) Married a lady named, Palmeda Faria.

They had a child named, Lawrence Santos, who owned a shoe manufacturing business, owned the local, Hawaiian, baseball team, was investigated by the IRS, then died of heart attacks and heart disease a few years later.

Lawrence was married to Irmgard Evelyn Soares.  They had two children, who had children, so I hear.

Is Palmeda on your tree?

I have never found any evidence of my family being in RI.  Although anything is possible.  I also think that the name was changed to Russo before 1900.  My grandfather had children born before 1900 who were named Russo.  Interestingly, on my dad's death certificate his surname was Russo, but his father's surname is Faria.  I do remember my aunt speaking of two of her uncles, Ernest and Charles.  Charles was a fireman in Oakland, CA.

JoAnn,

This 1900 census from Newport Rhode Island sure fits. The Mary born in Rhode Island in 1885, then Henry born California in 1890. then back to RI seems odd, but the others fit . Interesting that Mary is shown as married, not widowed. One Ancestry tree showed Antonio J Faria died 1894, but there's no official date or place for it.

Ever hear of Mary or Henry?

Hi Eric,

I do not recall ever hearing of an aunt named Mary or an uncle named Henry.  Although I do know that my grandfather had several brothers in CA and all went by the name Russo.  The site below names a sister called Ambrosinia, but she was born in Madeira.

I cannot fathom why my grandfather didn't tell his children more about his family.  My father never knew his father grew up in Hawaii.  The only reason I thought to look there is because my aunt had said that he traveled to Hawaii on many occasions.  There is no record of naturalization, because they became citizens when Hawaii was annexed as a US territory.

This is from the Oakland Portuguese newspaper 1887. It shows Antonio J de Faria Russo as the president of a Portuguese fraternal order. Little doubt that he's the great grandfather.

Inline image 1

The attached obit is for Henry B Faria. I have seen his WW1 draft card, and censuses from 1920-1940 in Oakland or Berkeley. The Draft card lists him as Henry Benjamin Russo, but the 20 census as Henry B Faria

Maybe the reason nobody mentioned him is  that he was estranged from the family. The closest match for  him in the 1910 census is Henry Russo at Alcatraz Military prison. It shows him born 1886 California, with farther born Spain and mother Portugal.

The name Joao is the name of the 4 year old brother that went to Hawaii with the family.  Interesting, because I could find no other info on him.  Does it have a birth date for Maria?  I am wondering if the oldest son returned to Madeira.  Possibly this is his wife.

JoAnn,

The lead story there is the Moana loa eruption and earthquake. They talk about the population being terrorized, especially the Portuguese people.

Here's the translation of the article mentioning A J Faria Russo.

The government has just granted a letter of incorporation Luzitana Benevolent Society. This company was founded on January 1st five years ago, has been very happy and is well capitalized today. The officers elected for the coming year  are as follows: President, Antonio J Faria Russo ; secretary, J M Vivas; Treasurer, Manuel A Gonsalves; Board;  J G Faria, Joao Gomes, Jose M Fernandez. A G Silva and J R Oliver.

JoAnn,

I think you're right, Joao is the oldest son returned to Madeira. Here is a passport of Maria and children leaving Madeira in 1898. She has the three youngest children. That would explain why they were in Rhode Island in 1900.

The notes at the bottom say Maria is a widow and that this is her second time leaving Madeira. It shows her heading to New York. I'll see if I can find the ship list. It may have whatever relative may be Rhode Island.

There we are,

The ship list, It shows her joining son Guilherme A Faria,( William ) at the US Training School. This is most likely The United States Naval Officer Training School at Newport, Rhode Island. That explains that. She states that she was in the US

before in California in 1895. Makes sense, Antonio dies in 1894, she brings the family to California, likely to join relatives ( Hawaii was not part of the US then), Then a few years later takes the children born Hawaii and California to meet family

in Madeira and maybe claim money or land of her late husband's. After William is done with the school, she returns the family to California

JoAnn,

This passport shows Maria's brother bringing his family to Hawaii in 1883. They can be found there in the 1900 census with many more children. Use Abel Souza to search

The arrival card from Hawaii confirms they made it. Interesting, it shows parents as not married when they left, yet have 2 children. Sometimes people couldn't afford to get married, but with their intention stated they went ahead

and cohabitated and had children baptised and it seemed allright . I've seen this in Azores research a number of times.

Hi JoAnn, Eric, and all the others,

Thank you very much for all of the information.  My grandmother (Ernest's daughter, Lola Russo) and my grandfather both died when I was 4 so I have a few direct memories of them but no knowledge of their history.  My mother, Lola's daughter, died very young and before I had a chance to ask her about these sorts of things.  This gives me an excellent start.

It's interesting that Charles was an Oakland Firefighter because Ernest's daughter's husband retired as a Richmond (not far from Oakland) Firefighter as did their son (my uncle & Ernest's grandson).  I was a firefighter for a short period of time and my kids are now firefighters.  With Charles' information that gives us 5 generations and 100 years in the fire service.

Thanks for all the information.  I'll try and reciprocate soon.

In 1929, my grandfather lived at 6012 Chabolyn Terrace, Oakland, CA.  That home later became the property of Anthony and Lillian Faria, my aunt.  Tony was from the Faria family in Pinole, CA.  The large old Faria family farm house is a museum there now.  This is weird, but the 1920 census shows that a Maria Russo already lived with her daughter Laura Harrison in Richmond, Ca.
