NEWS

Fedora 6.5.1 Release Candidate: Now Available for Testing

Earlier this month, Fedora 6.5.1 Release Candidate was announced and is still available for testing. This release incorporates several updates and community-identified bug fixes. The most significant update comes in updating the OCFL-java library to v2.1.0 which brings with it significant performance improvements for S3 write speeds.

Some additional highlights include:

  • Updating Docker tagging schemes
  • Updated documentation
  • Several transactions-related bug fixes
  • Several Security updates

We need your help testing the RC and reporting back on your findings. Please provide your feedback on the Fedora wiki on Fedora Slack in the #Tech channel, or by reaching out directly to Dan Field at dan....@lyrasis.org. Testing feedback will remain open until the end of November at which time we will move to production release.

We are extremely grateful to our dedicated group of committers who worked extremely hard to bring this release to you. I’d like to thank the following individuals who contributed to these releases:

  • Ben Pennell, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • Jared Whiklo, University of Manitoba
  • Dan Field, Fedora/Lyrasis
  • Mike Ritter, Fedora/Lyrasis
  • Demian Katz, Villanova University
  • Peter Winkles, formerly UW Madison

2024 Virtual Fedora Showcase Recordings

We are excited to announce that the recordings from the 2024 Virtual Fedora Showcase are now available online for community viewing. All recordings can be found on the Fedora YouTube Channel.

All provided Showcase content, including slide decks and agenda, can also be accessed on the Fedora wiki.

Thank you again to everyone for your participation, attendance and engagement. The event was a great success and that is largely because of you. We look forward to virtually hosting you again next year!

Holiday Closures

This is a reminder that Lyrasis offices are closed from December 25 through January 2, 2025. As such, the Fedora Program Team will not be available during this time. All community meetings will be paused and will resume following the closure. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

MEMBERS' CORNER

Welcome to New Members

This month we welcomed another new institution to the Fedora Member Community: The Archives of the Republic of Slovenia. This national archive serves to collect and preserve heritage materials for the Republic of Slovenia. It holds historical public archival material and documentation from government agencies and other public stakeholder institutions.

The team at the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia joined the Fedora community when they migrated to Fedora 6.x and were seeking support on managing their repository more efficiently. We were excited to welcome them to the UK/EU User Group meeting this past June in Gothenburg, Sweden at OR. The Archives joins Fedora as Bronze Level members in recognition of their commitment to the long-term sustainability of the Fedora program.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

Documentation Review Work-a-Thon Sessions

We are continuing with our regularly scheduled documentation review sessions. We are working diligently through the review worksheet with a goal of completing all outstanding updates early in 2025. To help us complete this project on time, join any of our live working sessions. This is the perfect opportunity to get involved with the Fedora community as a non-developer.

Details:

  • Session length: 30 minutes
  • Frequency: Every two weeks until the end of December 2024
  • Zoom link to join
  • No registration required

Who can join?

  • Anyone! No need for deep technical Fedora knowledge. Whether you can spell, click links, or check boxes — you're qualified! So please consider participating.

AI Discussion Series

The Fedora community, in collaboration with the Fedora Governance Group, continues to host a series of AI discussions for anyone interested in exploring the evolving impact of AI on repositories, infrastructure and the work we're doing within our institutions. These sessions offer a collaborative space to tackle the challenges and opportunities AI brings.

This month we broadened the invitation to other repository communities, and welcomed attendees from DSpace, Vivo, Islandora and the Samvera communities. We continue to hold space for any interested individuals to join us. This is how you can participate:

Details:

  • Next Meeting: Monday, December 2 at 11 a.m. EST

·         Meetings will take place monthly on the first Monday of each month.

If you would like to be added to the recurring calendar invitation, please email arran.g...@lyrasis.org.

Fedora Registry

With the launch of the new Fedora website, we have also moved the Fedora Registry. In order to see the most accurate information on global Fedora installations, we are asking all users to submit their updated Fedora information via our new registry submission form.

This new form allows you to register multiple Fedora instances in one submission, eliminating the need for multiple entries.

The registry’s goal is to help us understand our install base, and what versions of Fedora are being used globally. This critical information allows the program team to continue to provide the support necessary for our entire community of users.
