Hello Islandora Community,

I wanted to share some information on the FITS Transition meeting happening this Thursday. From Andrew Woods:

As a follow-up to the FITS Transition Planning discussion that began in December, the January 29th meeting will focus on advancing next steps toward engaging with the Open Preservation Foundation (OPF) as a potential new organizational home for FITS. In preparation for Thursday’s meeting, please review the “FITS Letter of Support” and come ready to discuss.

The stronger the demonstrated support from the FITS community, the more compelling the case will be for OPF to consider assuming a long-term stewardship role for the project.

Please join us for an open conversation on FITS Transition Planning:

Date/Time:
Thursday, January 29, 2026 @11:00 a.m. Eastern

Details & agenda:

We would also like to extend special thanks to Scott Prater and Mark Jordan for drafting the letter of support, and to Eben English for coordinating outreach with the Samvera community.

All are welcome. We especially encourage practitioners, contributors, and organizations that rely on FITS to attend and share their perspectives.

Thanks to Mark Jordan for bringing this to my attention. While I cannot personally attend on Thursday, this is important work and I am happy to help support however we can in the Islandora Community.

All the best,
Aubrey Shanahan

Hi everyone,

You may have already seen requests on various channels for FITS users to sign the letter to the Open Preservation Foundation to become the new organizational home for the FITS software. I would like to ask that as many Islandora implementors as possible show support for this transition. Signing the letter entails no commitment from your organization; rather, its purpose is to demonstrate that the FITS user community is dedicated to ensuring that the software remains supported and viable. All Islandora repositories use FITS, unless you have gone out of your way to disable it.

Islandora Foundation leadership is considering providing a supporting testimonial in the letter, and Aubrey is coordinating efforts to make that happen. But, in the meantime, please consider signing the letter on behalf of your organization.

Thank you,

Mark
