How do _you_ do Date Facets?

I'm looking into best practices (or even passable practices) for dealing with dates in Islandora. 

I've documented what I've found so far on my wiki, "Dates in Drupal and Solr".

I think we'd like to have flexible ways of storing dates, and flexible ways of querying against them.

What techniques or modules have you found that work for you?
