Hello Islandora Community!

I’m so excited to share some of the many accomplishments from 2025 with you all. This also serves as the return of a regular newsletter, which you can expect every quarter.

It has been such an honor to be your Community Manager this year, and I’m hopeful that the groundwork we are laying with our committees, interest groups & working groups will set us up for success going into 2026 & beyond. Enjoy these highlights from your peers, and look forward to all that’s coming next year!

Documentation Committee

Chair - Yamil Suárez

Reviewed and approved new Terms of Reference to formally move from an Interest Group to a Committee.
Reviewed and merged necessary documentation pull requests (including EDTF date processor).
Began work to move recipes documentation from Islandora Labs to the Islandora Documentation Repository.
Looking to FLVC documentation as potential model for improvements to Islandora end-user documentation.

Metadata Committee

Chair - Rosie LeFaive

Reviewed and approved new Terms of Reference to formally move from an Interest Group to a Committee.
Began working toward metadata documentation that is more user friendly.
Ongoing review of best practices around metadata & taxonomies.
Held discussions around post-migration metadata cleanup.
Started work to add “volume” and “issue” fields to Repository Item.

Technical Advisory Group (TAG)

Chair - Annie Oelschlager

Welcomed Josh d'Entremont as a new Islandora committer
Added Mend's Renovate CLI to keep Islandora's docker image dependencies in Islandora-Devops/isle-buildkit up to date.
Streamlined Islandora's backlog management by implementing GitHub's Stalebot, which helps keep GitHub issues and pull requests fresh, and fosters better community engagement during Islandora’s weekly tech calls.
Reviewed two new repositories that have been donated to the Islandora Foundation:
Lehigh University donated scyllaridae. Scyllaridae is Islandora’s new microservice framework, replacing Crayfish.
University of Prince Edward Island donated mirador-integration-islandora. This project builds the mirador webpack that is used to embed Mirador on Islandora sites.
Reviewed and discussed the Enhanced Event Data for Derivative Microservices document:
The short-term solution has been to create and merge PRs, unlocking the ability to add PDF generation for books. We are currently working to implement this feature.
The long-term architectural vision is to shift Islandora's event management entirely into Drupal (PHP), which will greatly simplify debugging, and lower the barrier to community contributions.

Membership & Fundraising Committee

Est. October 2025 | Chair - Aubrey Shanahan

Created a plan to bolster membership in early 2026.

LAC-GLAM Interest Group

New Working Groups

Adoption & Workbench working groups also spun up this year.
The focus for Adoption is removing barriers to entry & improving ease of use. There is a work plan in place with deliverables coming in early 2026.
Workbench aims to take some of the work off the shoulders of Mark Jordan by assisting in development and support for this key piece of software.

IslandoraCon 2025

Many thanks again to the IslandoraCon Planning Committee for their work to make this conference a success, despite the need to pivot to virtual. And thanks to all of our presenters, panelists, and workshop leaders. We had 124 attendees registered, with over 100 attending each day. All IslandoraCon 2025 presentations are now available for you to view on our YouTube channel.
