I'm looking for a good artwork (images of paitings, sculptures, scanned photographs, etc.) metadata schema and form.  I expect to make modifications to the form and our metadata display, but I'd like to start with the best possible schema and form to minimize customization, as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or content you care to share.  Take care.

Hi Mark,

We have used MODS a lot with success. It's a very flexible standard and maps well to Dublin Core.

Thanks all.  I will check out CDWA in the morning.

Alex:  We use MODS exclusively right now, but our MODS form needs to be significantly modified to pick up new artwork-friendly fields and lose some not-so-friendly fields.  Do you have a form in MODS specifically tailored to artwork?

I don't have a form created, but I believe VRA Core is intended as a schema for artwork.

Hi Mark,

We don't have one for artwork, but we do have one for photographs, following the Minnesota Digital Library Guidelines (not sure that would fit you, though).  VRA Core may fit your needs but I'm not familiar with it.

I've used this document in the past when I need to go through metadata standards:

It's a little dated (2010) but not too bad, yet.

Hi Mark,

Vassar uses VRA Core for its LUNA (art images) database, and I know that it has served us well -- it really is the right schema for art objects.  I don't have an Islandora form, unfortunately, for it, nor a crosswalk to DC, since it's been used in a different system.  :(  Sorry!  I'd be happy to ask about getting a copy of the ingest form that the art library uses, though, if it would be useful.  (I don't know what system it's written in, but just so you could see the fields if helpful.)

The Getty has a neat crosswalk chart to see where the different schema map well (and where there is compromise), though no XSLT:

There's no listing of any VRACore-to-DC XSLT or any ingest forms contributed (https://github.com/Islandora/islandora_ingest_forms).  Hmm.  My guess is that, if you start, there would be some uptake by the community! :-)

Best,
Joanna

Hi Mark,

We're now struggling with the same question, and I came upon your post as I searched for the answer. Have you made any progress you might be able to share since this discussion took place last year?

Cheers,

Brandon

Hi Brandon and sorry for the delayed response.  We ended up creating an all-purpose MODS form and then customized some copies of it for various collections, including our artwork.  So our artwork is cataloged using MODS, but with a few changes in some of the field value selection lists and defaults that we use.  I would be happy to export the form and psot a copy if you think it might be useful.

What about continuing to use MODS as the primary metadata schema and then incorporating necessary art-specific fields from VRA Core into the MODS <extension> element, giving you the best of both worlds?
