September Islandora Foundation LAC-GLAM Meeting
Date: Thursday, September 4, 2025
Time: 2-3 PM EST
Topic: University of Pittsburgh - Taxonomies and Discovery
30-minute presentation followed by Q&A and LAC-GLAM Misc.
This presentation offers a practical look at how taxonomies function within Islandora 2 and why they matter for discovery. We'll share how our team conducted a comprehensive assessment and cleanup of legacy vocabularies prior to migration: consolidating
duplicate terms, standardizing formatting, aligning with authority data, and leveraging tools like OpenRefine and Python. During migration, we implemented scripts to generate and manage terms automatically and handled complex taxonomies to ensure consistency
across collections.
Now that we’re moving towards a production environment, we’re exploring options for additional normalization, authority linking, and enhancements such as synonyms, hierarchical structures, and improved browse and facet experiences. We’ll close by discussing long-term maintenance plans and how this work directly improves search, collocation, and connected metadata in production.
Presenters: Michael R. Bolan, Meaghan Elise Cash, and Tyrica Terry Kapral (University of Pittsburgh)
