Hello Islandora,
I am writing today to present a plan for some overarching changes to the Islandora codebase. This relates to the item on the Islandora Roadmap: “Scope a modularizing of Islandora Defaults and consider a Solution-Pack-like wrapper for functionality.”
We are proposing a series of short-term and longer-term changes, as described below.
Motivation: Why Modularize?
The topic of modularization has been regularly discussed in the Tech call, to a general consensus that modularizing Islandora is desirable to:
Ease installation, use, and maintenance through improved transparency and minimized software interdependencies.
Increase the number of use cases for Islandora, driving adoption and wider community contributions.
Facilitate ongoing feature enhancements.
Based on these community conversations, the Leadership group asked committer Rosie Le Faive to gather information and conduct initial consultations with key Islandora partners and to take on the role of Product Owner for this project. This role, and the overall process governing this work, is identified in the Procedure for Soliciting Community Contractors and Service Providers (see also: Conflict of Interest Policy).
Community Consultation
In consultation with several key contributors to Islandora, Rosie has produced a helpful initial document, outlining a section of work that relates to modularizing Islandora, as well as key priorities and recommendations. We would like to now circulate this document in the wider community for your comments and feedback. In addition to commenting on the document, Rosie will also chair a Town Hall meeting on the project in lieu of the Tech call meeting on June 22nd from 1-2 Eastern. Rosie will also present in an afternoon session of the June 28th Islandora Open Meeting. Pending feedback from these sessions, we would be announcing a Call for Proposals by early July, and hoping to award the contract around the Islandora Conference.
How to Provide your feedback
Attend the Town Hall Zoom call on June 22nd from 1-2 EST using the Tech call Zoom link.
Attend the Islandora Open Meeting on June 28th at 12:15p.m. EST. Visit the agenda with a registration link.
Comment directly on the Specification Document (in constant development as we gather feedback).
Email rlef...@upei.ca with feedback on the document, or comm...@islandora.ca if you have ideas for more inclusive feedback mechanisms we should consider for this community consultation.
Warm thanks for your contributions. Your voice is essential in ensuring that we maximize our ability to use Foundation resources toward our shared goals.
Best,
Isabella (on behalf of the Leadership Committee)
