Unfortunately the only way to fix this was to reformat the entire drive,
which obviously deletes any and all articles from the news server. Backing
up the articles is simply not feasible, although I did backup the ISLAND.*
articles and restored them afterwards.
Normally I'd schedule something like this so you'd know it was coming, but
the file system corruption was rapidly spreading, making entire directories
(hierarchies) of articles inaccessible. When it suddenly couldn't create or
access articles under "alt" I felt it was better to just do it now and get
it over with.

Hi Mark,
just in case the consequences of this accident inconvenience some people
more severly: which other public news server can one directly access
with newsreader software via Islandnet? (I presume that in order to read
DejaNews one needs to use a web browser?)
Thanks: Hendrik

Not really. You need a terminal program or telnet. Just log
in and at the home prompt type ww. You'll be in lynx. When the
screen comes up type g (as in Goto) and then
http://www.dejanews.com/
This gives you the glories of dejanews without the annoying
banner ads.

I'm not aware of any public ones that allow you to post, as that's an open
invitation to spam. There are a few (very few) that will allow you to
read news. Off the top of my head I don't know the addresses of any
though. A web search for "public nntp server" should turn up something.

It's very fast and has about 25,000 groups. It's probably the current
pick of the open NNTP servers.

Hi Jonathan... by my reckoning LYNX is a web browser :-)

Yes, that's certainly an advantage!
Thanks: Hendrik
Makes sense. Reading incoming news is mostly what will be needed in the
case of a problem like the one you had mentioned - one can send messages
either from here or via Eudora...

Thanks, guys!
ttyl: Hendrik
They also may not have all the groups you want to read.
cheers,
