SEEKING SISTERS TO TAKE PART IN AN ENTERTAINING EVENT

We are thinking about putting on an entertaining event, based around
the theme of 'The Beautiful Hijab'. The aim would be to give sisters
confidence and modest pride about Hijab at a time when it is under
attack; and to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by those
less fortunate than ourselves. The event will include a talk and
discussion, a 'live' exhibition demonstrating the different styles
of hijab worn around the world, a 'Most Beautiful Hijab Contest',
quiz, drama and dinner.

If this sounds interesting and you think you could contribute to
making this event a success, please get in touch. As part of the
event, we are also planning to hold an 'auction' in which we will
be giving participants the opportunity to 'gunge' three or four
volunteers. We are therefore looking for confident and popular
sisters with a good sense of humour, who would be willing to
volunteer. You should be prepared to take part in full jilbab /
abaya and hijab. We are also interested in hearing from anyone
with talents such as writing, poetry, drama, dress making,
cookery and so on. We would like this to be a fun event, so
kill-joys need not apply.

The event will be for sisters only and is scheduled to take
place in London in the spring, insha Allah. To get involved,
send an email to: happ...@ntlworld.com

The City Circle presents:

UZBEKISTAN - THE AMBASSADOR SPEAKS OUT

Speaker: Craig Murray (Former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan)

Date: Friday 25th February 2005
Time: 6.45 pm - 8.30 pm
Venue: 45 Crawford Place, off Edgware Road, London, W1H 4LP

Craig Murray was withdrawn as British ambassador to Uzbekistan in
October 2004. He is currently suspended on full pay. He has been
an outspoken critic of the regime's human rights record and has
exposed how the West favours brutal dictators that are on its
side in the "war on terror".

Mr Murray maintains that people in Uzbekistan are tortured into
confessing that they support Bin Laden because the state is
seeking to persuade the West that its domestic opposition is
somehow connected to Al Qaeda. To fight its war on terrorism,
Uzbekistan obtains aid from the US. The fact that opposition
to the regime is based on gross human rights violations is
never remarked upon. Western security services appear all too
keen to accept Uzbekistan's assertions that it is fighting
the war on terrorism.

The circumstances surrounding Craig Murray's eventual removal
as Ambassador remains a grave cause for concern. Despite the
smear stories that he claims have emanated from the Foreign
Office that he was incompetent or an alcoholic, the truth
appears to be that he broke an unwritten rule by exposing
the brutality of the Uzbek regime, when it was becoming an
ever more important ally of the West.

A US airbase in Uzbekistan with 6-7 thousand troops was used
extensively in the war on Afghanistan. The US now wants this
base to be permanent; it is strategically vital since it is
within an hour of Russia and China and within five minutes
of Iran.

Coventry City Circle Presents:

COMPASSION - AN ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE

By Shaikh Dr Riyad Nadwi (Rector, Dar al-Uloom Oxford)*

Date: Saturday 26th February 2005
Time: 6pm - 8pm
Venue: Muslim Resource Centre, Red Lane, off Stoney Stanton Road,
Foleshill, Coventry, CV6 5EE

Islam is often portrayed as religion characterised only by strict
laws and endless rules, in contrast to other world religions that
are perceived to be faiths of love and compassion. Shaikh Riyad
will speak of compassion from an Islamic perspective, which he
believes is a fundamental component in the faith of every Muslim.
He will explain compassion in the light of the Quran and Ahadith,
and draw comparisons with contemporary notions of compassion and
its relevance to the individual in the modern world.

This lecture is derived from a series of tafsir sessions dealing
with the concept of love and compassion in Islam. Both parents
and teenagers will find it stimulating and extremely beneficial,
insha-Allah.

in Lucknow, India, where he studied the traditional Islamic
sciences under the late Shaikh Abul Hasan 'Ali Nadwi (rh) and
other renowned scholars of the Indian sub-continent for a period
of twelve years. He also holds a doctorate in Cognitive Science

DEMONSTRATION AT BOW STREET MAGISTRATES COURT

Take a day off work for someone's freedom and attend this protest
against abuse of basic human dignity.

Date: Wednesday 2nd March 2005
Time: 8.00 am - 12.00 noon
Venue: Bow Street Magistrates Court, Bow Street, Covent Garden,
London, WC2E 7AS

This demonstration will be in protest against the extradition
request of Babar Ahmad by the US Government. His defence hearing
will be on this date. The Ahmad family are requesting all sincere
people to attend and show their support.

There will be cake stalls and balloons for children plus Islamic
songs. Enjoy a family day out at Bow Street Magistrates Court
supporting the right of a British-born Muslim to a fair trial in
the UK. Remember this is a test case under the new Extradition
Treaty (2003). If he is extradited then many other Muslims will
follow him. They will be exposed to torture and brutality by the
U.S. without even the slightest chance of justice and a fair
trial in a country that has destroyed and abused the rights of
Muslims in the U.S. and across the world.

It may mean that you will have to take a day off from work but
this is a small price to pay for saving Muslims from going
through horrific experiences as witnessed in Abu Ghraib and
Guantanamo Bay. Please invite others to come along as well.

NEW ANTI-TERROR LAWS - TAKING LIBERTIES

Date: Wednesday 2nd March 2005
Time: 7-9 pm
Venue: Committee Room 10, House of Commons, Westminster, London, SW1

"I have a horrible feeling that we are sinking into a police state."
(George Churchill-Coleman, former head of police anti-terrorist
squad during 1980s-90s)

Charles Clarke's new proposals for civil "control orders" on
"terrorist suspects" would serve political control. They would
punish individuals for what they might do, not what they have
done. The orders would include electronic tagging, restrictions
on association and phone and internet usage, and possible house
arrest. Any breach could lead to imprisonment. The executive
nature of such powers would allow for politically motivated
restrictions on individuals and their activity. All these
"anti-terror" measures promote politics of fear, especially a
culture of suspicion towards entire communities.

This public meeting is called by Campaign Against Criminalising
Communities, Liberty, Stop Political Terror, Association of Muslim
Lawyers, Voices UK, Respect and others. Speakers include Gareth
Peirce, Gillian Slovo, James Welsh, Prof. Paddy Hillyard, Saghir
Hussein, etc.

ideas and institutions. Our educational institutions, focused on
traditional conformation, have failed to equip Muslims for life.
Better performance requires education that instils values and
attitudes as well as modern ideas and skills. Attitudes that we
need to support: Growth, Creativity, Participation, Perseverance,
Good Deeds.

Islam21 has designed a course that is unique in its ideas/system,
based on a tri dimensional worldview. Learn about this course that
will change your life, bring the best of Islamic attitudes in you
and empower you to help your community build better institutions.

Liverpool University Islamic Society Presents:

RULES & ETIQUETTES OF MARRIAGE

A one day study programme with Shaykh Hasan Ali, Sidi Abdur Raheem
and Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

Date: Saturday 5th March 2005
Time: 11:00am - 7:00pm
Venue: International Lounge, Guild of Students, 2nd Floor,
University of Liverpool, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool, L69 3BX

The stand of Islam is, on the one hand, against sexual license;
consequently it prohibits fornication and adultery, and blocks
all ways leading to them. On the other hand, Islam is also
against suppressing the sexual urge. Accordingly, it calls
people towards marriage in an age when fornication and adultery
are rife, prohibiting renunciation and castration.

Marriage itself is a Sunnah, which means that it is recommended,
not obligatory on us. Therefore, if a Muslim does not marry
throughout his life, he commits no sin, although he has chosen
a course for his life different from that recommended by the
Prophet. The recommendation is made in the strongest of terms,
as the Prophet (pbuh) says: "Marriage is my way, (i.e. Sunnah)
and a person who disdains to follow my way does not belong to
me." Yet the emphasis put on the recommendation is only to
heighten its desirability.

This course will cover the fundamentals of marriage according
to the Hanafi, Shafi'i and Maliki schools of jurisprudence and
will also touch on the spiritual aspects of marriage.

Topics to be covered include: Concept of love from an Islamic
perspective, selecting a spouse, compatibility, engagement,
ceremony, contracts, intimate relations between spouses, rights
and responsibilities of spouses, secrets of conquering love,
polygamy, secret marriages, marriage with non-Muslims, birth
and upbringing of children, creating the tranquil home.

* All are welcome

ISLAMIC WILLS SEMINAR

Date: Saturday 5th March 2005
Time: 6.15pm - 8.30pm
Venue: KD Grammar School, Alexandra Road, Whalley Range,
Manchester, M16 8NH

The importance of the Islamic will (wasiyya) is clear from the
following hadith: "It is the duty of a Muslim who has anything to
bequest not to let two nights pass without writing a will about
it." (Sahih al-Bukhari)

At present if a Muslim dies in the United Kingdom, domestic laws
will be applied. The criteria applied by virtue of these laws are
not the same as those applied under Islamic personal law. Hence
having an Islamic Will is absolutely essential.

The seminar will be practical and offer bespoke solutions to your
circumstances, insha'Allah. We have secured the services of a
leading Muslim firm who specialise in this field to deliver this
seminar, where we will have the opportunity to learn:

* How the Shariah inheritance shares are calculated
* Essential elements in Islamic Wills
* Inheritance Tax planning in Islamic Wills
* Requirements of English law
* Writing an Islamic Will

INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMIC FINANCE & ECONOMICS

A one-day intensive course delivered by Shaykh Nizam Yaqubi*

Date: Saturday 5th March 2005
Time: 10am - 6pm (registration at 9.15 am)
Venue: Room D1, Hong Kong Theatre, Ground Floor, Clement House,
London School of Economics (LSE), Aldwych, London, WC2A 2AE

In the words of our Noble Prophet (saw), "Indeed actions are only
based upon one's intentions and every person shall have that which
they intended..." (Bukhari and Muslim).

Many young young Muslim men and women are studying or working in
the Business, Economics and finance-related sectors in the City.
However, few are doing so for the pleasure of Allah (swt) and have
little or no concern about how to benefit the Muslim Ummah; rather
it is purely for financial gain. The reasons for this are many,
but one of the principal factors is lack of knowledge with regards
to the basics of Islamic Finance compounded with a lack of scholars
who can competently explain such matters. For this reason, a one
day intensive course has been organised to introduce some of the
concepts, principles and practicalities of Islamic finance, e.g.
contracts, the need for Islamic finance, and our responsibility
as Muslims towards it in building and sustaining our communities.

It is hoped that Muslims, after attending this course, one would
purify their intentions, develop increased awareness and interest
in the Fiqh of Mu'āmalāt, and be capable of introducing to others
an alternative form of finance. With London being regarded as the
'capital' for Islamic Finance, the time could not have been more
appropriate for Muslims to benefit from a course of this nature.

Subjects to be covered: Introduction to Islamic Banking and Finance,
Principles of Contract in Islam, Basics of Sales Contract, Mudāraba,
Murābaha, Ijāra (Leasing), Bai' al-Istisnā', Bai' as-Salām, Basic
models of home finance in Shariah, Takāful, and much more.

* Shaykh Nizam sits on the Islamic supervisory boards of several
Islamic financial institutions and is an active scholar in Islamic
finance. He received a BA in Economics and Comparative Religion from
McGill University (Canada) and is currently completing his PhD in
Islamic Law at University of Wales (United Kingdom). He works as an
independent Shariah consultant based in his home country of Bahrain.
His accomplishments and responsibilities include: Professor of Tafsir,
Hadith and Fiqh in Bahrain since 1976; author of several articles and
publications on Islamic finance and other sciences in English and
Arabic, including Tahqiyah al-A'māl fi Ikhrāj Zakāt al-Fitr bil-Māl,
Risālah fit-Tawbah, Qurratul-'Ainain fi Fadā'il Birr al-Walidain,
and Irshād al-'Uqalā' ilā Hukm al-Qirā'ah min al-Mus-haf fis-Salāh.
He is also a Shariah Advisor to ABC International Bank, HSBC Amanah,
Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Bahrain Islamic Bank, Citi Islamic Investment
Bank and other organisations.

- Notes will be provided.

Islamic Circles in conjunction with Muslim Youth Network presents:

HELPING HOMELESS MUSLIM YOUTHS ON THE STREETS

Date: Sunday 6th March 2005
Time: 11am - 1pm
Venue: Froud Centre, 1 Toronto Avenue, off Romford Road, Manor Park,
London, E12 5JF

With rising social problems in the Muslim community, we are sadly
seeing a growing number of Muslim children running away from their
parents' homes. Many end up on the streets of London and to get
involved in all kinds of vices ranging from begging, petty theft
and drug dealing, to armed robbery and prostitution.

Masjids don't open their doors to these people. Jama'ats are too
busy with their white elephant projects, oblivious to the fact
that smaller intiatives can sometimes go a long way. Let us not
forget the hadith narrated by A'ishah (ra) who reported that the
Prophet (saw) said: "The deeds most loved by Allah (swt) are
those done regularly, even if they are small." (Bukhari & Muslim)

MuslimYouth.net will be introducing the Homelessness Experience
which is designed to provide participants with an exposure to
the true nature of the conditions, potential risks and hazards
experienced by homeless people. On Friday 11th March a group of
young people will leave their homes to take part in an experience
they will never forget. They will be sleeping rough on the streets
with only £3 each to feed themselves over the two days. They will
be giving up the things they take for granted to gain an insight
into what it means to be homeless.

JESUS (pbuh) - A PROPHET OF ISLAM

by Shaykh Abdul Hakim Murad (Cambridge University)*

Date: Tuesday 8th March 2005
Time: 5:15 pm - 7:00 pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre A, Science Lecture Rooms, University of
Liverpool, Crown Street, off Brownlow Hill, Liverpool, L69 3BX

Jesus, son of Mary (peace and blessings be upon them) is honoured and
respected by over a billion people across the world. Muslims believe
that he was a prophet of God in a long line of honorable prophets,
who taught his people to worship and obey the One True Lord, the
Creator. Of all the prophets, Jesus is extensively written about in
the Qur'an. The Qur'an makes it very clear that Jesus was a prophet,
chosen by God to teach his people, but not associated with nor part
of God. He performed miracles, by the grace and power of God alone.
He of himself could do nothing - all of his glory pointed back to the
One Almighty God. Muslims believe that the message Jesus preached was
one and the same as the message that all of the prophets brought to
their people: Worship Almighty God, and Him Alone.

Shaykh Abdul Hakim Murad graduated from Cambridge University with a
double-first in Arabic in 1983. In 1989, he spent two years at the
University of London learning Turkish and Farsi. Since 1992 he has
been a doctoral student at Oxford University, specialising in the
religious life of the early Ottoman Empire. Currently Secretary of
the Muslim Academic Trust (London) and Director of the Sunna Project
at the Centre of Middle Eastern Studies at Cambridge, which issues
scholarly Arabic editions of the major Hadith collections.

Time: 6.30pm - 7.30pm
Venue: Reynolds Room, Royal Academy of Art, Burlington House,
Piccadilly, London, W1J 0BD

The art and architecture of the Timurid dynasty, founded by Timur in
1370 became the embodiment of dynastic charisma for contemporary and
later dynasties of Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and India. Professor
David Roxburgh of Harvard University, demonstrates how art was used
as an ideological instrument by Timur and his successors, as in the
inscription to Timur's palace in Shahr-i Sabz: 'If you have doubts
about our grandeur, look at our edifice.' In addition to discussing
Timurid architecture and how it was commissioned to meet the needs
and expectations of a diverse population, the lecture also introduces
objects of a more private nature, genealogies, panegyric biographies,
and histories to explore the various political, social, and cultural
meanings developed in Timurid art.

The Jawziyyah Institute Presents:

TAQLID, MADHHABS AND MUSLIM UNITY

A one-day course by Sidi Abū 'Āliyah Surkhīl ibn Anwar Sharīf

Date: Saturday 12th March 2005
Time: 10am - 6pm
Venue: Birkbeck College, University of London, Malet Street,
Bloomsbury, London, WC1E 7HX

The issue of taqlid and whether or not a Muslim is obligated to
follow one of the four madhhabs, or schools of Islamic law,
continues to stoke frenzied arguments between Muslims. Yet from
the perspective of Islam the issue is remarkably straightforward,
with a scholarly consensus underpinning much of it. The aim of
this course is to clarify the nature of taqlid and its rulings
in Islam, and to explain the place of following a madhhab - with
respect to both the layman and the scholar. The course shall root
itself in classical scholarship and highlight those areas wherein
there is unanimity between jurists and those aspects upon which
they differ. Key themes addressed by the course are:

Defining taqlid and madhhabs; the two types of taqlid, ;he Islamic
ruling on taqlid; the requirements to be a scholar in Islam and the
dangers of unqualified opinions; the Four Imams and their statements
on taqlid; historical reasons for the birth of madhhabs; madhhabs
and the scholar; madhhabs and the duty of a layman; differences of
opinion - mercy or menace?

* Entry is by prior booking only. Deadline: Wednesday 9th March

* Notes and refreshments will be provided
* All welcome

interested in gaining work experience in this new programme. If you
have not worked with children before then we would need to do a
police check and the expense for this will be paid by us.

Reliabilty is the key issue. If you are reliable and can help our
son at least until the summer (ideally longer) then please contact
us for more information. E-mail your contact details and background
information to pleasehe...@aol.com
