The School of Advanced Studies (SAS) at UMT invites Conference papers pertaining to contemporary issues in Muslim societies and cultures. The main idea behind this conference is to move away from the myopic comprehension of Islam and attain a broader understanding of the contemporary issues and challenges faced by the members of Muslim societies across the world.

This conference hopes to elaborate upon:

·         The contemporary issues in Muslim societies requiring better understanding and redressal by inviting perspectives from multiple social science disciplines.

·         Recent history and events shaping the lives of contemporary Muslims, and influencing the social and cultural fabric in areas where Muslims are either in majority or minority.

·         The normative framework, traditions and rituals existing in various Muslim societies across Africa, the middle east, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe and North America, among others, and the ways in which existing cultures have adopted Islam or adjusted to its influence.

·         What it means to be a conscious Muslim, the diverse debates regarding the various theological, theoretical and methodological concerns and theories emerging from the Muslim society, regarding the above two points. Universal and local ways to be a Muslim. The transnational vs. the national vision and practices of Islam.
