Fasting on the day of 'Ashura'

Day of 'Ashoora' (10 Muharram) is going to be on Dec. 6 '11 (tuesday) this year &
Day of Tasu'a'  (9th Muharram) is going to be on Dec. 5 '11 (monday) this year, bi-izhnillahi ta'ala!

Prophet {alayhi salaatu was salaam} said:

"And fasting the Day of 'Ashura' expiates the previous year (i.e. its sins)."
(Muslim)

It is recommended to fast on the Day of 'Ashura' and the Day of Tasu'a', and they are the 10th and 9th of the month of Al-Muharram. This is due to the Prophet's statement:

"When the next year comes, if ALLAH wills, we shall fast the ninth day (as well)."
(Muslim and Abu Dawud)

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so keen to make sure he fasted any day and preferring it over another except this day, the day of ‘Ashoora’, and this month – meaning Ramadaan.
(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1867)

Four min video by Shaykh Waleed Basyouni to encourage us to fast on the day of 'Ashoora' :

The virtue of observing a lot of naafil fasts in the month of Muharram

The month of Muharram is the first month of the Arabic year, and it is one of the four sacred months of Allaah.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“The best fasting after Ramadaan is the month of Allaah (Muharram), and the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is prayer at night.”

Narrated by Muslim, 1163.

But it was proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not fast any month in full apart from Ramadaan, so this hadeeth is to be understood as meaning that it is it is encouraged to fast a lot in the month of Muharram, not to fast the whole month.
