Value of Human BirthThis material world is compared to a turbulent ocean, human body is compared to a ship, spiritual master is compared to the captain of the ship and the instructions of the Vedas, of the spiritual master in disciple succession and the sadhus is compared to favorable winds. When the winds are favorable, the sailing is faster. The whole purport in this verse is dedicated to the theme that one must use the rare human form of life to surrender to the instructions of the Lord. Human body is compared to a ship because it gives us the opportunity to surrender to the supreme Lord; to understand the cause of our suffering and to find a cure. Prabhupada used to say that if a man is diseased, if a human being is in pain he can at once go to a doctor but an animal that is in pain, just roams around in the street. Human life is a life of responsibility. If one doesn’t use this human birth for self-realization then one is considered to be very unfortunate. In the concluding lines of the purport, Prabhupada presents the translation of Narottama dasa Thakura’s famous prayer where he says — hari hari! bifale janama gonainu manusya-janama paiya, radha-krsna na bhajiya, janiya suniya bisa khainu “O Lord Hari, I have wasted my life. Although I have taken this rare human birth, I have not served Radha and Krsna, and thus I have knowingly drunk poison.” Today’s society is so degraded that even if you offer a glass of nectar to people who are drinking poison, they say, “I don’t want nectar. Let me drink poison.” Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura give us a story of a man who was about to fall off the roof. He was flying kites and he was so absorbed in flying his kites that he was about to fall off. Someone came there and said: Be careful! But the man said: Let me fly kites; don’t disturb me. That is why Prabhupada quoted that if we don’t cross this ocean of nescience despite all of the facilities then certainly we are all intentionally committing suicide. This is suicide. Isopanisad says “atmaha”. Atmaha means one who is the killer of the soul and specifically one who gets human life but doesn’t take to the spiritual life is considered to be an atmaha, a killer of the soul. In the previous verses we read about the different species of life and how one gets this human form of life. If this human body is not used in the service to the Lord then it is considered to be tragedy and it is equivalent to drinking poison.
