Hi all,
I've been asked to configure an Isilon as backend of a M$ DFS system.
I've searched around and also here there aren't many discussion about it.
Is there something special in configuration or I simply configure my AZ in the usual ways ( AD + SmartConnect + NetworkPool + the usual stuff ) and then the customer configure his DFS to point to my FQDN and I'm done or there are things to keep in mind ?
I've explained the customer that is a not so usefull configuration as all the plus that DFS can provide ( and more ) are already provided by Isilon/OneFS/SmartConnect/etcetc but he want to keep this config and I've no way to do differently ( unless I can find some showstopper arguments ).
Thanks in advance.

Well, we use DFS to allow for easy DR failover for SMB users, and an arguably simpler UNC path. e.g.

\\example.com\DFS\someShare

which in DFS is just:

\\smb.sitea.isilon.example.com\someShare    [Active]
\\smb.siteb.isilon.example.com\someShare    [Inactive]

Then a DR failover for SMB just ends up being a task of modifying the DFS targets, which could be scripted, I imagine.

Cheers,

John

same here, but the question re performance probably relates to

dfs resolving underlying path and if it uses smartpools to load balance IOP's across nodes ?

Well, with a DFS-mounted Isilon share, a client sees something like:

PS> Get-SmbMultichannelConnection

Server Name                  Selected Client IP    Server IP     Client Interface Index Server Interface Index Client RSS
                                                                                                        Capable
-----------                  -------- ---------    ---------     ---------------------- ---------------------- ---------------
smb.sitea.isilon.example.com True     192.168.1.30 10.10.10.94   20                     9                      True
smb.sitea.isilon.example.com True     192.168.1.30 10.10.10.149  20                     8                      True
smb.sitea.isilon.example.com True     192.168.1.30 10.10.10.53   20                     7                      True
smb.sitea.isilon.example.com True     192.168.1.30 10.10.10.151  20                     10                     True

So, a DFS connection is just connections to the normal SmartConnect pool. Note the above shows what is arguably a bug in Isilon SmartConnect/SMB server, as here the multichannel connections are to IPs in pools other than our SMB pool.

Cheers,

John

Which version of OneFS?
Have you reported this to support / engineering?
Prior to 8.2 I know the SSIP was incorrectly included for multichannel but I’d not heard of any other issue like that.

Its really worth taking a look at a product called superna. They are a dell authorised supplier and their products integrate with onefs to provide a number of features one of which is dr capability with dfs being supported and it manages the failiver (and back). They also have a ransomware package and an auditing package with some additional vms. We've been running superna here for nearly give years and ive just put in the auditing and ransomware protection. If you have any budget its probably worth talking to your account manager about an introduction and perhaps a free trial.

We have previously reported the problem to Support, at a time when SMB clients ended up using the SSIP too (think we were on 8.1.x). We're currently on 8.2.2, on the (long, tortuous) road to getting approval/maintenance window to update to 9.1.0.x.

John

superna is a good , but its not a easy product.

we extensively used DFS + isilon.  Easy to migrate to different NAS location/DR. we created at least 50-80  DFS links to subfolder level of isilon smb shares,

Easy to disconnect any SMB share when ever its not needed.
