All,

When researching the David Dudley Field family, I came upon Marshall Field, unrelated, (1835-1906), who at age 17 was a clerk in a dry goods store in Pittsfield. He left for Chicago in 1856 and the rest is the history of Marshall Field and Company. Perhaps the Melvilles bought goods from him.
