A possible resolution is to start a new group from scratch.

create a new email address and join ishmailites from that address.
Safest bet would be to create a gmail (aka Google Mail) account (one
would suppose that gmail addresses would have a high degree of
compatibility with Google Groups).

I have been unable to gain access to the moderation space where I could affect people's access, so I vote for a new group. What should it be called? I am willing to create it and moderate it, but only if at least one other member is willing to co-moderate (hopefully making a recurrence less likely). 'Pip's Avengers'? 'Stubbites'?

I’m not able to give any technical advice or help. If nobody can erase Ishmailites, will it just go on existing and possible creating confusion by pretending it’s active?
As for a name, I loved the name Ishmail and once moderated it for a spell. Mailville? Naw!

Hmm, I was going to suggest deleting the old group and then recreating it, but I suppose if you can't 'moderate' it you also can't delete it...?

John is still unable to post. If I understand correctly, the root cause is a known issue with the software of Google Groups. At least one other contributor has been shut out as well.
