Dear Brothers Assalam o alaikum,
I would like to start by apologizing for not being as diplomatic as Brother Fareed or Brother Tamer have been. The issues we are discussing are very important and generate intense emotions, as they should. It is not my intention to offend anybody but to voice my opinion as others have done. These comments are not directed at anyone in particular but at all who are participating including myself, for we will be judged not only by our actions but also for our words.
Then the disclaimer that my statements here are not reflective of the FCS School Board in any way, to which I belong.
I have been following intently the discussions on this bulletin board for a while now and would comment on two separate issues. The first is the issue about Masjid Bilal and the second about ISF being a Dictatorship.
With due respect to Brother Fareed and his contributions to ISF, I think time has come to vote on the issue about the Hazel property up or down. He has made a very spirited defense of his proposal and I commend him on being so clear and crisp about his idea. Unfortunately I am shortsighted and unable to see the merits of this proposal. I agree that the majority of the concerned muslims in Folsom may not like the direction that the Masjid Bilal project has gone, but totally scraping this project is also not what most people favor.
In my opinion the changes made to the MB project are a panicked response to the criticisms hurled at the Leadership. Alhamdolillah we have a place to pray and meet. We also have a school that is bursting at the seams. We have our day to day issues just like any other organization but Alhamdolillah we are addressing them as best as we can. Our Facilities reflect the community's commitment at this time and inshaAllah when the community is ready for a State of the Art 4 million dollar Masjid Bilal, we will have that too.
I have no qualms in stating that the primary purpose of the Islamic Society of Folsom should be to cater to the religious needs of the muslims of Folsom. As much as we would like it to be the Islamic Society of Greater Folsom, there is neither a need nor a commitment in this community for this greater cause. There already exists a mosque or musalla, Alhamdolillah in all the surrounding communities that brother Fareed has mentioned. I am also not sure why the muslims in these communities will ditch there own projects to start a new project. If there is an interest in pursuing the Hazel project on part of the other communities, I am sure this can be followed up at the leadership levels and brother Fareed can spearhead this effort if he wishes. I have personally, in my limited contacts in these surrounding communities not found any burning desire to proceed.
The other issue that I have with brother Fareed's letter was his contention that if we continue to pursue the "misdirected " Masjid Bilal Project, we should reimburse the people who do not want to continue this project. I guess my question will be, should we set up a payment plan or will they accept an " IOU ", because I am sure they will not accept credit cards ?. The people who donated their time and money thus far did so, I hope for the sake of Allah and not for the sake of a plaque on the wall of Masjid Bilal. If they disagree with this project proceeding forward to the extent that they " would want their money back" then they should refrain from participating further. This attitude of " My way or the Highway" is not constructive.
Dear Brothers we need to understand the difference between disagreement and dissention, between ikhtilaaf and nifaaq. Islam respects disagreement but does not in anyway condone disagreement for the sake of disagreement or for personal vendetta. There are many examples in Islamic History where religious leaders, despite not agreeing with the Political Leader/Khalifa, did not call on the muslims to rise up against him untill unless he was advancing an agenda that was unislamic. The comment about 70 percent of the muslims in Folsom wanting to break off and establishing their own community is incendiary and misguided. If 70% of the muslims in Folsom are unhappy with the leadership and the direction that ISF is heading in, it is time for them to stand up and be counted. The people who are in the ISF leadership have proven themselves with their selfless commitment and patience and the Board is not a rubberstamp for one man's decisions as is being alleged.
And Just because we do not have western style elections to elect the ISF leader and board, makes ISF a Dicatatorship? wonderful!!!. By this measure, all the Khulafa-e Rashideen were Dictators, MaazAllah. Can anyone tell me of one period in Islamic History where western style elections were used to select their leaders. Did muslims not establish the greatest civilizations ever where everybody's rights were protected and respected. Muslim leadership has always emerged from pious, dedicated muslims who have had a vision to advance the greater cause. Nobody is being stopped from bringing their ideas forward but this attitude of "holier than thou " needs to be reevaluated.
We need to take measure of what we have and not of what we do not have. Ask people who move here from Portland or Austin or other such communities and they always answer that the most remarkable difference is the unity that this community has, whether it is at the daily iftaars in Ramadhan or the construction and renovation of the present Musallah. And now all of a sudden 70% people want to establish their own community??. To them I will say that the name " Islamic Society of Folsom" is already taken. So they can establish the islamic society of west folsom or east folsom or north or south.
JazakaAllahu Kair for your time.
Khurram Ali
