IPSO Issue Scam Alert to Irish Retailers

Impact: Financial Loss

Overview

The Irish Payment Services Organisation Ltd (IPSO) and An Garda Siochana have issued an alert to Irish retailers about a scam involving individuals ringin up shops and pretending to be from the shops' merchant acquirer (card payment processor).  The scammers convince members of staff to issue refunds to a dummy card.

More details of the issue can be found on the IPSO website at http://www.ipso.ie/section/ScamAlertRetailers

Solution

IPSO advises shop staff not to process the transactions requested but to take down the numbers quoted if possible so the cards can be blocked by the merchant acquirers. Staff should hang up if they receive a call claiming to be from their merchant acquirer and to then phone back their card processor on the phone number they know to be correct, from their bank statement or phone book. Shops that are contacted by the scammer should report the call to their local Garda Station and to their merchant acquirer.
