I was thinking it would be cool to use a crawler like the ones at http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler#Open-source_crawlers to scour the internet for only pictures... .jpg ect ect.. but the meta data only. Across popular sites like fliker and so on.

Then some how auto magically correlate that with gps info.  So say if I typed in to the search "Hiawatha, Kansas" or the cords and radius, It would return all the awesome pics of me (and town) based on location. So instead of a "viewer" addon or exif viewer website, it would be the opposite and grab all the data out in the wild for later reference. Kinda like cree.py but without twitter or fliker. So a exif location search engine. Very targeted in use.

I thought i would need a database of camera info to start with. Get the meta data for each and fire up a crawler for a defined location like Northern California as a test.

What would be even cooler is some sort of name list like are sur names "Forrester or Sverdlik" or screen names ect.. to add to it. That's to much for now but I think a small version is possible... I think.
.

i don't know, it's probably been done but I wanted to mess with web crawlers so I thought thiswas a fun way to attempt it...

So...That's why i'm looking for a large dataset of camera info....

Wouldn't the Geolocation data etc. you need for your usecase be in the standard GPS data fields what is the purpose of the camera database?

Or is there more to this than I'm considering?

What would be interesting is if google allows the ability to use their search API's to search based on EXIF like the suggestion in the following thread for finding camera serial numbers (http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/websearch/suggestions-for-google-search/1clEDl-tXRk)

Brain
Dig the link to suggestions for google product forums. There totally not thinking from my perspective. /me maniacal laughter  http://www.stolencamerafinder.com/ I think is a paid service but my reasoning behind this was say you were investigating Boby Mallory In Tucumcari NM so think of the posibilites of a central DB.... so say search query " 35°10'18.12"N  103°43'27"W " Then drill down to the target Boby Mallory. That said... holy crap the more i read about it, it's another idea that was knocking around in my skull only to find out how huge of an undertaking it would be... But yea it would be rad.
