Subject: Faces Behind CAIR-LA: Summer Interns & Law Clerks
To: marya....@gmail.com

Greater Los Angeles Area August 17, 2009

An important goal at the CAIR-Greater Los Angeles Area office is to train the leaders of tomorrow.

CAIR-LA achieves that goal through its recently established legal clerkship program as well as a comprehensive internship program in civil rights, communications, government relations, and community outreach.

CAIR-LA Law Clerks ...

This year, CAIR-LA has been blessed with three spectacular clerks -- Azeem Khan, Fatima Dadabhoy, and Aliya Hussaini.

Fatima Dadabhoy graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law in December 2008. She began clerking for CAIR while she awaited her results for the California Bar Exam.

She says that if her plane ever crash-landed on an island that moved through time and space, she would want the CAIR staff to be among her fellow survivors because of their strength of character and resourcefulness; they would definitely make sure everyone got off the island safely.

She completed her "thoroughly enjoyable" clerkship at the end of July and is now an associate attorney at the Law Offices of Ziad Rawa.

Aliya Hussaini graduated from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in political science and history in 2006. She is currently a law student at USC and expects to graduate in 2011.

About the clerkship, she says: "I really enjoyed clerking at CAIR-LA because I was given real work to do on real cases. Ameena [CAIR-LA Staff Attorney] involved me in every step of the process, from initial intake, to researching and building a case, to actually drafting and filing a complaint.

"Plus, the variety of cases CAIR deals with always kept the work interesting. I'm really glad I had the opportunity to turn my education into action this summer, and I plan to remain involved with CAIR's work in the future!"

CAIR-LA Interns ...

CAIR-LA provides a rigorous internship program, which is open to college students and recent college graduates.

Interns essentially work in one department - civil rights, media, government relations or outreach - but are trained across departments as well. They are also constantly exposed to day to day happenings at the office, whether it's investigating a civil rights case, or helping organize a press conference or pushing forth the American Muslim perspective at advocacy and community meetings.

This summer, CAIR-LA is blessed to have three excellent interns. All of them are from the city of Corona and heavily involved with the Islamic Center of Corona-Norco, the MSA-West and MSAs at their respective colleges.

Sara Aceves is a politics and religious studies student at Pomona College.  She currently is the programs & development intern at CAIR-LA.

She has also worked with the group - Truth, Justice and the American Way, among others.

About the internship, she states: "The internship has been empowering, especially as a young Muslim woman, and it has opened my eyes to the American justice system and the importance of civil rights advocacy work."

Sarmad Bokhari is a third-year undergrad at the University of California, San Diego, majoring in International Studies (Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies).

He also participates in the Muslim-Jewish interfaith panel on behalf of his college MSA and will be completing a study abroad program in Egypt this fall.

He is currently the media intern at CAIR-LA.

Taher Herzallah is studying political science and international affairs at the University of California, Riverside.

He is also the president of MSA-West, and the civil rights intern at CAIR-LA.

Both Taher and Sarmad recently participated in the Viva Palestina U.S.A. convoy, whose aim was to deliver humanitarian relief this summer to suffering people of Gaza.

CAIR-LA Pre-law/Law Clerkship

The Council on American-Islamic Relations - Greater Los Angeles Area, is seeking 2Ls, 3Ls, and recent law grads for an unpaid clerkship with CAIR-LA's legal department for the fall term beginning August 17, 2009.

Pre-law candidates and 1Ls may also be considered on an as-needed basis.

Clerks will be exposed to immigration, employment discrimination, public accommodation, First Amendment, equal protection, and procedural due process issues.

Duties include case intake and follow-up, record-building, client interaction, memo-writing, and legal/policy research, and possibly attending meetings with community leaders and representatives of government agencies.

Clerks should have good people and writing skills, be responsible, self-motivated, and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in Spanish, Arabic, or Urdu a plus, but not a requirement. Course credit may be available.

Please send resume, brief cover letter and two references to in...@losangeles.cair.com, with subject heading "law clerkship application."

Applications will be accepted on a rolling-basis.
