Subject: Hedrick Phone Bank Event
To:
must...@gmail.comHi Imam Omar Mustafa,
It was a pleasure meeting you at the Bhaghani get together this past Saturday. You had a wonderful idea to put together a phone banking event next week and invite your volunteers from ISCN. Mr. and Mrs. Bhaghani have been gracious enough to offer their home for the event. Mrs. Bhaghani would prefer that we stage the phone bank on Wednesday August 4th. However if Thursday would work better for you, she is willing to shift a couple of appointments she has to accommodate us. Fridays are notoriously dreadful for calls, so it is best we do not schedule the phone banking event for then. Please let me know if Wednesday August 4th from 4:30pm to 9pm would work out.
Please feel free to forward the following to your volunteers.:
I have lived in Corona my entire life and have had Rep. Ken Calvert as my congressman for the majority of it. After doing some research and reading up on my congressman (
Fox news expo video, non-partisan watchdog group
CREWS most corrupt, even his
wikipedia page) I was ready to vote for anyone
but him. I dug a little deeper and found out that a local educator was running against him by the name of
Bill Hedrick. The website read, "come and meet Bill Hedrick"...so I did. I figured, it's just an hour; I waste more time on useless endeavors that don't affect me nearly as much as how my Congressman does.
After meeting Bill and asking him a couple of questions, I found him to be a very thoughtful and genuine man. I heard how he felt about the
issues and how he would deal with them were he given the opportunity to represent us. At the end of the meeting, he encouraged us to get involved in whatever way we could. Having recently graduated from college, I could only offer him my time. I felt a little embarrassed that I could not offer more than just that, but I quickly came to realize that my time was what was going to make the difference.
We live in a very
gerrymandered Congressional District (check out a
map of CD-44), and Ken Calvert has a lot of money and connections. We were and are the definite underdogs. Outspent 5 to 1, in a district that was never considered competitive. What was never taken into account was how hard we all worked. We had about 900 volunteers help with everything from canvassing neighborhoods, to phone banking, to envelope stuffing, and much much more. There were dedicated interns helping with events and a motivated candidate who was pushing for honesty and real representation.
And you wouldn't have guessed what was about to happen.
We were so close to victory that the election was not officially called until weeks after the election. We lost by a little over six thousand votes. Six thousand votes! That's nothing! Our congressional district is made up of more than
639,000 residents,
253,827 of which voted for a congressional candidate in the 2008 election .
We lost by less than 2%.
I urge you to take a look at who we have representing us now and take an active role in your community. We might not have all the money Calvert has but we have a real shot at winning this with the help from our volunteers (
OJ article). We are going to win this election by talking to people like you and I about the issues that matter to our community.
Please join us next Wednesday the 4th of August from 4:30 to 9pm we will be phone banking from the Bhaghani residence 252 Villafranca St Corona, CA 92879.
Hope to see you there!
