When using the search function for the Food Database, the portion is
shown in the description. For instance, if you search for "onion raw"
the first result is "Onions, raw". Right after the calories is a
secondary description that shows the portion; for "Onions, raw" this
is "1 cup, chopped." If you add that to your Food List, the portion
amount is lost.

I think the portion is an important piece of information to know,
especially when building a meal. Even the items that are pre-loaded in
the Food List do not have this information, so I have no idea how much
cheddar cheese (cabot light) is equal to 90 calories. Is that one
ounce, eight ounces, 1 cup diced, etc.? Having to memorize all the
portions for foods in my list kind of defeats the purpose of building
a list...I still have to search for it to find out the portion.

Is there something I'm missing, or is there a workaround without
having to rename everything in my Food List?

You are absolutely correct. Currently people put the portion into the
title of the item. You are not missing anything.

One of the things we are working on is a measurement conversion system
to take full advantage of this. Originally, I was looking at this as a
nutrition tracker for nutrition labels people entered. So, usually,
when making the food the item is right in front of you. However, it
became clear that this app could be used for far more than that. I was
caught unprepared for the sheer volume of interest in this application.

I have brought in more help to deal with all the issues you are
providing feedback on! By the way, this feedback is incredibly useful.
There is also an issue tracker where these ideas can be reported:
