When the BBS is down...

...is there any web site or other outside the BBS resource that gets
updated letting folks know when the BBS will be back up again?

If not, I think I'll create one. (That is, assuming the BBS comes
back up again.)

It would appear that you type "New" and it copies your account from
whip.

However, since Whip is down, it can't do that, and dumps you. I'm
thinking only people who have previously logged into Gestalt are able
to get in.

I'm a bit concerned because it refuses a connection quickly - Typically
if a machine is unresponsive you need to wait for a timeout. This
quick refusal usually indicates a port blocked by a firewall or a
service turned off rather than a machine that's down completely.

I guess we'll see eventually...

It is weird that it dies so quickly. Like David said, before when it
was down it would take awhile to time out.

This is pure speculation, but I could easily see someone at the U
deciding to block the telnet port campus wide just because practically
everyone on the planet uses ssh now for that kind of thing.

Thus blocking us from the BBS as well.

I have tried to connect from two different ip addresses with the same
result: immediate disconnect, no timeout.
Funny thing, I noticed about this newsgroup because I thought about
checking the RSS feeds on iscabbs.com for recent activity. Lo and
behold, there are recent posts in Babble>.

Could someone contact a Sysop and let them know of this issue?

As a follow up to our Gestalt conversation earlier, I wanted to
mention that Gestalt now seems to be available for anyone who has an
account on ISCABBS already. This is due to a recent code change Tanj
made. Thanks Tanj!

telnet gestalt.leepfrog.com

Login with your ISCABBS account name and password, and you'll be
logged into ISCABBS via Gestalt.

As far as I can tell so far, the user experience is exactly the same
as ISCABBS, except for the wholist and the profile list.

Anyway, the next time ISCABBS goes down, it is one more availabe
option. Especially since last time ISCABBS went down Gestalt was
still up! :)
