We have finished preparation for the entertainment. With this year's theme, Circo Cirque, there will be active performances and a DJ in lieu of a live band. Circo Cirque is a vaudeville/performance theme, not a carnival theme.
We are still seeking additional parent talent. For instance, we could use a piano player for the first half hour of the gala.
Please contact Havona at any time:

This year's auction will happen via an electronic bid device, allowing attendees to spend more time socializing. There will be cocktails and circus activities in addtional to food.

GUEST SPEAKER RE: LANGUAGE ACQUISITION: Gigliana Meltzi and Emily Bostwick
Gigliana will be sending a digital version of her presentation in April, for those who missed the meeting tonight.
A few factoids from the presentation:
1. Gigliana is originally from Peru. She considers herself bilingual in Spanish and English, though she spoke French in high school and as a child, German (which was replaced by English).
She has taught Spanish at a school in Connecticut. She studied English/Spanish equally since age 9.
2. Gigliana is currently raising her 2 year old daughter bilingually in Spanish and English. She believes that it takes planning and effort in the US because monolingualism is the norm and English is of higher status and prestige around the world. Children are aware of the prestige of speaking English. Emily is currently studying language attitudes and stereotypes. Even at age 3, Spanish/English speaking Headstart students perceive that English-speaking puppets are smarter and nicer.
Some Facts on Bilingualism:
1. Being bilingual makes you more marketable.
2. Academic language takes 20 years to develop
3. Minimum 5 years to develop academic language acquisition to perform well in school
In order to achieve receptive language acquisition, children need a minimum of 25% of each day in the target language.
It is good to supplement further if possible. (ie, Spanish Films, French night at home, opportunities to use it intentionally).
TV in the target language is only beneficial if there is discussion afterwards, so they use the language.
There is no benefit to tv for ages 0-2.
1 ISB parent uses tv to get his kids to speak Japanese instead of English because it inspires a switch in language.
Look for the link to Gigliana's presentation next month.

STRATEGIC PLANNING UPDATE: Rebecca Skinner
Rebecca gave a repeat presentation on March 18th at 8:45am, for those who missed the meeting.
Here are some notes from the presentation.
1) The Board of Trustees formalized a strategic planning process.
A formal presentation will be given in June with updates in the interim.
2) Reviewing fundraising feasability / capital campaign to fund next phase of expansion
3) Looking at other facilities to model for our own expansion (Fab Labs at Marymount, Open yard/sports space at an IB school in Hong Kong, Open technology work spaces)
4) Reapplying for acreddidation from Spanish Ministry of Education. Only 3 spots were offered/available last year
5) Looking at existing space at 477 Court Street (space within adjacent church property) as well as other Brooklyn locations for middle school expansion
6) It was noted that many school such as Grace Church High School have moved away from traditional library spaces to larger cafes/common space and digital libraries.
