I asked 50 Icelanders what Jónas Hallgrímsson would think of the
current Icelandic flag design. They all answered: He would dislike
it, but those times were different.
NoNo, 'those times were different' is not an argument. Jónas
Hallgrímsson would dislike the FRÓNBRÓK or ÍSLENDINGABRÓK!
Doesn't this ring a bell.
There is one symbol that is genuinely Icelandic and that is the Hammer
of thor. This is more so for Iceland than Norway, Sweden or Denmark.
Why? Because without the old Icelandic literature, we wouldn't have
known the name of the hammer: MJÖLNIR, a typically Icelandic name.
Counterargument: But in Iceland we are christian, we don't like a
heathen national symbol.
Untrue. Most Icelanders are christian but noone will argue that the
heathen part of the old literature sucks. Most Icelanders regard this
mythology as folk tales. And symbols of folk tales do no harm.
Moreover, the cross of the Danabrók is a crusaders cross. I don't
think the lutheran christians like the brutalities of the Crusaders.
As for me, the acceptance of the dannebrog cross is like saying: Thank
you Danes, for all your years of oppression, for all you good influence
on our language.
The reason Icelanders don't see this is because authorities have pumped
them up with the idea: It was a nice choice, because it is a symbol of
common ancestry.
Common ancestry, get a life. A symbol of Danish oppression on the
Icelanders, Norwegians,
and Swedes it certianly is.
People, embrace you hammer symbol. It is still time to alter the flag.
Look at the Greenlanders or the sami, they have chosen differently.
And if someone argues 'but they aren't Scandinavian'. What about the
Finnish flag, are they Scandinavian??
